She-Hulk Volume 2: Disorderly Conduct (edition 2015)by Charles Soule (Contributor), Javier Pulido (Illustrator)This was kind of made for me being a comic book written by a lawyer about a super-hero lawyer. And it delivers, for sure. Great story, great characters and lots of fun. The random "girl with umbrella" in Jen's building is my Harvey & Janet. I want a series about whatever it is she does out of her office because she seems super adorable and badass. Just remembered (from reading a friend's review) that the art is atrocious in issues 5&6 so, if you're going to read this, be warned of that. The first 4 issues are beautiful though. A super fun volume! I love all the cameos from other Marvel characters popping in and out of the various stories and cases. Soule's background as a lawyer really makes this volume shine as he's able to bring in real legal concepts to the stories being told. The lawyerin' dramatics are exciting and interesting and are by far my favorite sections of this run. The mystery of the blue file has been solved, and I found it to be a satisfying conclusion. Pulido's art has also grown on me. I wish this run could have continued on. More of a 3.5 Still good, and yes, Blue gets wrapped up, thank goodness. *whew* I was worried there for a moment. The Cap story was okay, kinda corny with the Rah Rah message it lead up to through the courtroom drama, but it could have been much worse. At least the whole thing felt pretty damn decent. Not blow-you-away, but feel-good. Plus, it's always nice to go out after a stressful day at the office to beat the living crap out of people, right? I'm a little sad that this was only a two volume run. The combination of legal drama and superhero comic was surprisingly successful for me. Though it's hardly surprising that this second volume's arc about Captain America needing to be judged for his past would win me. (Team Cap. Always.) The resolution of the blue file was a little underwhelming, but I suspect it was one of those things I would have gotten more out of if I'd read the intersecting storylines. Meh. I still would like to know more about Angie and Hei Hei. Enough to see if the next She-Hulk line continue where this left off? I'm not sure yet. This volume is back to Pulido as artist, which is much appreciated. Good fun. They really upped the lawyer game in this volume, having She-Hulk go toe-to-toe with Matt Murdock in the courtroom (and bringing real legal concepts like hearsay and dying declarations into play). The superhero storyline paled a little in comparison, though finding out the paralegal has powers was pretty awesome. |
