The Innocence Game (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard) (edition 2014)by Michael Harvey (Author)As the elder generation of great American crime novelists gives up the ghost, or retires from the scene (any chance you have another Matt Scudder novel in you, Lawrence Block?), Michael Harvey gives aficionados of the form some hope. This is a first-rate, stone whodunit, destined, I would hope, to become a classic of the genre. Very highly recommended. A book set at the McGill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and in and around Chicago will always fascinate me. I love reading books when one is so familiar with the area you are reading about. Just makes it so much easier to visualize the story. In this book Harvey takes three college grad students and embroils them in a case that features a murderer, cover-ups, dirty cops and others. There were a few surprises, and times one has to suspend belief and logic but it was entertaining and the action and story line moved relatively quick. Three graduate students selected for an Innocence Project-like seminar research the murder of a young boy and in their investigation uncover the truth behind the death of one of the student's younger brother and the corruption amongst the police. Fairly good pace, no unneeded violence, and the tone is reminiscent of mystery/crime writers of the 1940-50's. |
