Great story of an old man with a fascinating history. Similar to the tale of Forest Gump, with meeting and interacting with significant people in history, finding his way across continents and eventually deciding not to stay put in an aged care facility on his 100th birthday. Which let to a whole series of other adventures. ( )

Here's what I wrote about this read in 2016: "Really clever and fun, funny. Quite the life he led and quite the tyrants he met (and helped!), including once he climbed that window on his 100th birthday!". What I should have noted at the time is how like Forrest Gump Albert, the protagonist, is. Managed to be present for most of the major explosions, and very famous world leaders related to them, of the 20th century. ( )

i always laugh when i hear a book described as "a good romp" - but that's exactly what this book is. it's ridiculously awesome - the characters are well done and the story, though fairly preposterous, is funny. there are a lot of instances where i had a 'forrest gump' feeling while reading, in that people from history (political heavyweights) are woven into the tale. of course this narrator is unreliable...but who cares?? i think he could make the phone book sound interesting. Unhappy with the life and rules of the Old Folks Home where he is living, Allan Karlsson climbs out the window of his first floor room an hour before his 100th birthday party. He heads to the local bus station to go as far as his pocket money will take him. Allan's whole life has been an adventure and this latest adventure will be his most bizarre ever and lead him to a more satisfying way to spend his remaining years. At the bus station he steals a suitcase and boards a bus. He will meet up with a motley crew, a few criminals, and an elephant with the authorities and reporters on his tail. Interwoven between these modern day adventures is the story of Allan's 100 years and the amazing people he manages to come in contact with. We view 100 years of world history as only Allan could live it. Very funny. I hear there is a Swedish movie of this and I will have see if I can find it. ( )

This is the sort of quirky idea I thought I would enjoy: an old man leaves his nursing home in pursuit of a stiff drink. Unfortunately, there were too many "accidental" encounters with celebrity that made the book difficult to read.

Jonasson writes two different narratives. The first takes place as the old man stumbles his way through the Swedish countryside, making new friends and accidentally getting into trouble. The second takes place in alternating chapters. It is the biography of the old man, who meets and works with people like Stalin, Einstein's brother, Ghandi, and Roosevelt. These biographical chapters moved slowly for me and were rather uninteresting, despite the brushes with celebrity. ( )

I found 'The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared' very suitable reading for a few days when I had to work late and felt exhausted. It's an undemanding, fun, and absurd romp. Allan, the titular hundred-year-old man, inadvertently causes chaos by escaping his hundredth birthday party. Through a series of flashbacks to his earlier life, the reader learns that chaos and extraordinary luck have characterised his whole life. His involvement with major events of the twentieth century, especially the Cold War, is ridiculous yet very entertaining. He encounters various world leaders, most of whom he exasperates if not enrages. A lifelong talent with explosives and an easy-come-easy-go attitude serve him well across the decades and all over the world, from Stalin's gulags to the beaches of Bali.

The shenanigans following his 100th birthday are likewise endearing and nonsensical. There are a couple of surprisingly light-hearted murders. Indeed, various grim matters (war, totalitarianism, corruption, organised crime, nuclear weapons, etc) are treated with the same light-hearted whimsy. I did appreciate how effectively Allan and his cronies (essentially his criminal gang) bamboozled the prosecutor and corrupted the police Chief Inspector. The whole thing is hilarious and pretty cute, an ideal diversion when my brain has been flattened by long workdays. If reading at another point, I probably would have been tempted to nitpick. As it was, I just went along with it and enjoyed the ride. ( )

Very funny and I love his take on history but it gets quite wearing at times. ( )

What a long and rambling and fun story, as one might expect when about a centenarian! I randomly picked this one from the free downloads off of Audible and I’m really glad I did! It was complicated and clever and funny and quite enjoyable!! ( )

A humorous tale about a centenarian who escapes from the nursing home on his 100th birthday. We hear about his mad-cap adventures after his escape, as well as his zany life prior to entering the nursing home. There's a "Forrest Gump" element to this book. The main character, Allan, finds himself unwittingly involved in key historical moments.

I found the storyline of his escape to be quite entertaining, while some of the back story really dragged. ( )

A cheery, feel-good novel. This book covers the life and times of Allan Karlssson, unwilling resident of Malmkoping Old People's Home. His disappearance and subsequent adventures are detailed in this account, together with a parallel account of his involvement with more than a handful of the 20th century's most notable leaders, throughout the world. Allan is an innocent with the knack of being in the right place at the right time. He falls in with one rogue after another, but each is more affable than the last, while the Police and other law makers are a pretty useless bunch.

This is a charming book, though one that perhaps is just a litle too long. It's a perfect contrast however to the somewhat dark crime novels that have emerged from Scandinavia in recent years. Why not read it? ( )

Allan Karlsson is about to celebrate his 100th birthday, but instead of attending the party at his much-hated retirement home, he climbs out the window and walks directly into a series of ridiculous situations, starting with stealing a suitcase full of money from a criminal in the bus station and going on to involve several new friends, at least two murders, and an elephant. But none of it seems too bizarre to Allan, who it turns out has spent his life heedlessly wandering in and out of various major events of the past century, accidentally befriending heads of state and shaping world history.

The whole thing is utterly silly, and utterly delightful. You can't exactly call the main character a good person -- he's as amoral as he is apolitical, which is very, despite how often he gets caught up in politics -- but he is weirdly charming in his own forthright way, and vastly entertaining. The writing style is a lot of fun, too, and I have to give huge props to the translator for rendering something that feels exactly the right kind of humorous and quirky.

None of it is meant to be taken at all seriously, so don't start nitpicking it for historical accuracy or judging the characters' criminal activities. It's something you have to just decide to go with, in all its insanity, and then sit back and enjoy the ride. Which I did, immensely. ( )

The premise was interesting but the execution was not particularly amusing, or plausible. Maybe the reader needs to be raised in a Scandinavian culture to appreciate the telling. The flashback histories seemed a contrived way to make the MC important. Mainly skimmed after the first several chapter/episodes to see if the narrative improved, but basically a DNF. ( )

A very readable tale of a hundred year old man's life that parallels the major historical and political events of the 20th century. Understandably internationally acclaimed! ( )

Not what I expected. My kind of humor, too, just simple and sweet and a bit tongue in cheek. Amusing to see how they wove in the "behind the scenes" stories from history, and the characters, even the ones who are only alive for a few pages, are all hilarious and wonderful and surprisingly memorable. A silly yet clever book. Goodreads Review: After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he?s still in good health. A big celebration is in the works for his 100th birthday, but Allan really isn?t interested (and he?d like a bit more control over his alcohol consumption), so he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey. It would be the adventure of a lifetime for anyone else, but Allan has a larger-than-life backstory: he has not only witnessed some of the most important events of the 20th century, but actually played a key role in them. Quirky and utterly unique, The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared has charmed readers across the world. (less)

Story: 2 / 10
Characters: 6
Setting: 6

Another miserable contemporary novel. I had the idea to read a book with my girlfriend. Sadly, she chose this one. I stopped reading it at about page 200 to let her catch up. However, after a month she said I had to carry on and return the book to the library. In the end, I've had to suffer through this book alone.
As for the book itself, I have little to say. Adventure stories often lack direction. As a result, they don't always work for every reader. In this book, I dismissed the story as ridiculous when the suitcase contents are revealed (page 20?). The adventure became progressively more unbelievable after that. The writing style appropriately complemented the events, but did not appeal to me much either.
Cannot imagine the movie being much better...NOT RECOMMENDED! ( )

A svéd Rejtő.

A cím jó, bár emlegetni elég hosszú. Kellemes, könnyed szórakozás, de kissé távolságtartóan, érzelmi töltet nélkül. ( )

A current-day crime caper & a crazy romp through late 20th century history. Things blow up & plenty of people die, but no animals — no elephants, no dogs — were hurt in the telling of this tale. I chortled out loud more than once. But then I am Scandinavian. ( )

A charming, warm and funny move. Beautifully woven with history, politics and an elephant.
