I read all this author's books when I was young, maybe even before the first series on TV aired. I appreciate them more now. This one was pretty good and I can picture the vets doing stuff now. When I was young it was a bit too descriptive, but I like it now. ( )

Even more charming than the first book. ( )

More library reading as a young teen. Stories still entertaining, but the anecdotal style eventually grates. ( )

I picked up this book used because I remembered loving All Creatures Great and Small. And this was not in the slightest bit less beautiful and touching. I don't know how he does it, but ... wow. Beautiful, touching, sad, and hopeful. An honest book that makes you either want to be a veterinarian yourself or have a healthier respect for them! ( )

Just like All Creatures, full of the stories of his life as country vet in Yorkshire with the tiniest bit of a plot structure as Herriot leaves for the RAF as the book ends. I have such a soft spot in my heart for the original series and I can just see it all play out as I read the stories.

One of my all time favorites. I love the depiction of a slower pace of life, the scenes of caring for animals, and the vivid description of the people he encountered. He also waxes poetic about the countryside and I love those parts too. Picking one of this series up is like having a gentle breeze wash over you and blow some of the craziness of life away. ( )

Not quite as good as All Creatures Great and Small -- narrative time less linear. Also the musical interludes between chapters were grating, especially since their duration varied. ( )

I remember my dad giving me these books for a birthday or xmas fairly early on, and I've loved them and returned to them ever since. Just re-listened to the excellent audio book version. _- love the accents, the humor, the wonderful setting, and the compassion to animals. Great storytelling. ( )

Although I enjoyed Mr. Herriot's first book, this one seemed like more of the same ole, same ole. It is a bit choppy, out of context. Sometimes he is married, sometimes he is not. Sometimes it is winter, the next day it is the heat of summer. It is an O.K. read. Just know, nothing new. ( )

Lovely tales of veterinarian Jim Herriot and his adventures treating animals in WW2 England. Delightful and funny stories if you enjoy historicals and are an animal lover. ( )

This is a collection of stories about a small town veterinarian, James Herriot. I laughed, I cried and I even know some of these people in these tales! I was captivated from start to finish.

I loved this audiobook! The narrator is fantastic with his perfect accent! Totally made the whole book.

You do not want to miss the antics involved in this heart warming read! The animals and their owners will keep you entertained!

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review. ( )

I can't think why I haven't read this marvelous book before! It's a lot of fun and I like the way he tells how it was when he was starting out in practice but also how the improvements in veterinary medicine have helped the domesticated animals. He relates his own foibles as he deals with the varied human characters as well as the others.
This program is read by Nicholas Ralph, star of the new PBS Masterpiece series and his interpretation is wonderful! I love listening to him as he portrays Herriot and everyone else.
I requested and received a free audio copy from MacMillan Audio via NetGalley. Thank you! ( )

A look into a veterinary practice in the English countryside of the 1930's. Follow James Herriot at the beginning of his practice and marriage until he leaves for his call-up to war.

A delightful read. ( )

No one else captures the life of a country vet better than James Herriot. In this collection of tales, the reader is treated to a variety of animals in many circumstances, from the most mundane nail trimming to the most dire where nothing can save them. But more often than not, James’ patients pull through, sometimes surprising even the doctor. We are also privy to a bit of James’ private life, as he courts his wife-to-be Helen. Well told and highly entertaining, these tales are classic. ( )

Read in its entirety to my infant, who I expect now to become an expert in 1930's veterinary medicine.

The world's most beloved animal doctor delightfully continues where he left off in All Creatures Great and Small with new adventures through the Yorkshire dales-- and a whole new menagerie of memorable patients. ( )

This is Herriot's second book about his vet practice in rural England in the 1930s. This one starts just after he has married Helen and ends with him joining the Air Force (presumably just before the war?). At this point, he is trying to expand the practice (which includes brothers, Siegfried and Tristan) to include more small animals (pets).

He is such a great storyteller! Not only does he include stories about the animals he treated, but he has stories about the people, in general. You can tell how much he loved living in the rural area, and he has plenty of humour in his stories. I really enjoyed this one, as well. ( )

These four books were the first I read from the adult section of the tiny town library I grew up with. Still remember them fondly - still don't want to be involved in animal husbandry or to have a pet. That universality of appeal is a large part of their genius. ( )

James Herriot was a veterinarian in rural Yorkshire during the early to mid twentieth century. His books are just collections of stories about his work and life. All Things Bright and Beautiful picks up where All Creatures Great and Small left off. Herriot is married to Helen now, and his companions and customers are just as charming and witty as ever.

There really isn’t any difference between Herriot’s first and second books; they could have been published as a single volume except for the length. They’re just wonderful books that make you feel good about being alive, especially if you’re an animal-lover. I definitely recommend Herriot’s work to anyone who’s interested. ( )

SUPER! Gotta be one of the best-loved series - ever! No objectionable language or sexual situations. I listen to this series once per year, usually in the winter when the short days get depressing. ( )

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! James Herriot is a veterinarian in England. He writes about his personal life and his work with the animals and the animal owners. He is SO funny. He can write about the most mundane things and make it a hilarious anecdote. You can tell by his writing that he cares about the animals and the people in his life and life in general.- 5 stars! ( )

Just wonderful! I have always enjoyed these books. James Herriot is a wonderful storyteller. Great characters animal and human. Christopher Timothy reads this audio edition and does a great job. ( )
