Loading... The awakening (edition 2009)by Kelley ArmstrongI read this book years ago with my oldest daughter, it's one of the series that got me back into reading and down my reading rabbit hole. I love the supernatural aspect, the whole family secrets build to Chloe, Simon, Derek and Tori's adventures getting to the bottom of the Edison group. I have this whole series and continued with the Darkness Rising. I love the building friendship they develop with their growing to know each of their powers. A lot of young adult books make the teenagers seem too grown for their age to try to fit it into a criteria I suppose of making sense in an adult world but Kelley Armstrong doesn't do that. They are teenagers taking on this huge world and still remain true to their age group. I wouldn't recommend the audiobook to this however, I tried to listen to it because I was in the mood to get into the story again but the narrator they chose sounded like a 5 year old and made for the story to be unbearable. If you are into supernatural, magic, and a world of mystery and a secret society that unfolds through every book, this is the series for you. It's a series I have read quite a few times and continue to do so. Love it :) Poor Chloe—with her escape plan failed, the news that her beloved Aunt is in on it the whole time and her love interest far, far away, things are just plain sucky. I don’t blame her for wanting to have a pity party. She learns, however, from her previous mistakes at least, and plots a bit more privately. The book picks up pretty much right where THE SUMMONING left off, and from there it picks up momentum for a while, slows down a little for more character development and then picks right back up again. Surprisingly, Tori, who is a supreme prima donna and witch, has some of the more (or less) shocking developments. Somehow, while still being a prima donna she makes herself useful to the others (Simon, Chloe, Derek) and isn’t quite as annoying. Or maybe it's because we see less of her for a stretch of the book. The friendship between Derek and Chloe grows deeper in this book, as does the tension it causes between Derek and Simon. I honestly cannot say if there is tension because the boys are jealous of the time Chloe spends with one or the other, or if Derek is really worried that Chloe will hurt Simon and is too inept at handling the situation. Personality quirks of Derek’s are explained in better detail—for instance, he sees Simon and their dad as his ’pack’ and doesn’t see much use for anyone else most of the time. As a werewolf his ’pack’ would mean everything to him, so it's natural for him to be wary of what Simon’s growing feelings for Chloe could possibly mean. We learn more about the backstory of the characters as well. Even though this is a first person narrative from Chloe’s perspective, we learn about Derek’s back story (in an offhanded way), and Tori’s and Simon’s as well. Most unsettling, however, is the repercussions of Chloe’s power and the Edison Group’s tampering with it. Without details, let’s just say that Chloe learns that being a necromancer is dangerous while awake or asleep. Some of the developments are predictable and others are perhaps too stereotypical to really be surprised by, but overall, this will keep fans entertained and guessing. This one took a little longer to get into than the first, but once I did, it was amazing. The five are on the run, after a lot of betrayals and twits, they end up with a smaller group. They have to find a safe place away from the Edison group. This one had a lot more fighting. That was good. Simon is good for Chloe. Derek is not. He is just mean and really annoying. I like Tori more than him which says a lot. Once you get to the good part this has nonstop action, you can not put it down. This is great for fans of supernatural anything, demons, zombies, spells, werewolves. It was really good. My favorite part of it is when Chloe does or says something stupid, Simon is nice, Tori is sarcastic, and Derek just looks at her like being near her is a challenge, that is the best part of this whole thing. The way the characters talk is fun to read. The first book really pulled me into this series but this one? I couldn't even finish. I felt like there was a lot of relationship wavering: Friends? Foes? Love interest? between all of the leads and it just got old because I need to feel like I at least know where something is going. And I felt like the "running" done in the story got old. I don't know. I just stopped reading it after I realized I was forcing myself. Maybe another day. Somehow my ratings and reviews were lost for this book series, so my review won't be as detailed as before. I loved this book series and I read them as fast as I can. I love the main character Chloe and the world the author created. Chloe and the people she meets along the way go through quite a roller coaster of events. This has a little bit of everything with action, paranormal, fantasy, and a little romance (Which is just how I like it, just blended into the story and not the main focal point.) I would definitely recommend this book series to people. This is the second book in The Darkest Powers series by Kelley Armstrong. It continues the story of Chloe Saunders and her friends as they try to escape from the Edison Group - a bunch of scientists that are using the supernatural teens as genetic altering experiences. I enjoyed this book as much, if not more, than I did the first book. Armstrong continues to develop the characters. I felt for them even more and rooted for them - I even started liking Tori. Somehow, Armstrong manages to write stories that are non-stop action and fast paced and still believable. (Well, as long as you have no problem believing in supernatural powers.) I recommend this series even more now. Wonder how long it'll be before the third book comes in from the library? An interesting and worthy follow-up to the first novel. The only thing that made me like it a little less was that it was slower-paced; not much actually happened over the course of the novel. But that's something that seems to be common in a lot of sequels, so I'm hoping it'll be a "bridge" to a more eventful third novel. You got to see much more of the characters' personalities, which was a plus. Chloe's interest in film and the way she always relates it to the story is cool too; it makes her much more realistic to have a genuine passion for a certain subject. This was definitely better than the first book, and I liked the first book. I can't wait until I can get Reckoning. I'm beginning to wonder if there is going to be something between Chloe and Big D as I like to call him. They've been getting awfully close. But then it's like there is something brewing between her and Simon as well. Tori, i'm still pretty leery of her, i'm afraid she's a spy from the start, but we shall see. Picking up pretty much exactly where The Summoning ended, The Awakening continues the journey as Chloe, now a prisoner in the Edison Group’s testing facility. While she tries to escape, she comes across information that will help her and the other Lyle House kids, and she also meets a demonic entity that powers the facility. Eventually she does make it out of the facility alive and catch up with Derek and Simon, but much to their dismay, Chloe’s brought someone else along for the ride. The Awakening started off a little slower than the previous book, but it was a compelling read nonetheless. Like The Summoning, though, it has its tropes and its guilty pleasure status, so bear that in mind. That being said, you can’t read the one and not the other. As far as the characters are concerned, well … I could tell you what I think, but then you’d figure out the premise and then there’ll be spoilers and everyone will be grumpy. I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. Kids with superpowers! Awesome! I love the adventure and the chase. The lies and the deceit. Kids working together agains adults. Power to the little people! I was hooked from the moment I opened the first book. It's an excellent series. I was on the edge of me seat. I love the hide and seek in the old factory. Being all sneaky. Trying not to die. Working together. Real team work. Love that. I can't wait to see how it all ends. You know, it wasn't bad. I finished it in just a couple of days. But again, I'm looking for fluff, nothing too heavy. I get enough of that in the real world. It's a fun book about teenagers on the run from bad adults who want to kill them because the kids have supernatural powers and isn't as angsty or heart throbby as Twilight. The first two books don't even really focus on romance because, really, when you're on the run and you're raising the dead by accident and turning into a werewolf when is there time for romance. This one picks up right at the end of the first book, which is nice for me because I didn't have to wait long for the whole trilogy to come out. The characters aren't too flat like some YA fic has. Chloe, the main character, has a stutter. But to be honest, it's another Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars and Secret Circle without the sex. Which is cool because the running away parts are pretty fun. As long as you're not looking for some serious reading, go to your library and pick up this trilogy. I'm on the final book now and I keep putting off my homework to finish it. 3.5 stars. Quick and exciting. Of course, it's the middle book of a trilogy, so it suffered from being not much more than a bridge, but there were definitely some fun and a few thought-provoking bits. I was totally creeped out by the zombie bats. And I loved the line, ... he'd showered twice a day, and it still hadn't fixed the puberty smackdown." And the 4th-wall discussions, eg (parashrasing cuz I forgot to save the place): 'If this were a movie, right now we'd be talking about how we have to overcome our differences to work together as a team. But we won't, because we don't want to get eaten my a shark like Samuel L. Jackson was.' Looking forward to finishing the next within a couple of days." |
