Loading... Reckless (The Powerless Trilogy, #2) (edition 2024)by Lauren RobertsI can completely understand the hit or miss nature of this book when comparing it to Powerless. Powerless was a constant punch of action! It was the banter, the trials, the love triangle, all the things. Reckless was really one dimensional in comparison. I went into this book having seen the information from Lauren Roberts that this was truly Kai and Pae's story. With that guiding post, I knew it wasn't going to be what Powerless was, so I was not disappointed expecting that. I do think that is where most of the disappointment comes from. For a vast majority of the book, I really enjoyed the chase that was happening and the struggle of escape. How the battling between capturing Pae also turned into a battle of them fighting their desires. I thought it was really well done. I do feel like the last strife between them was maybe one too many, but it wasn't enough to frustrate me. The big plot twist at the end, oddly enough, I saw coming. The why is still a mystery that I want to know, but the what I feel as though was pretty easy to spot. I am heartbroken for the two of them though! How do we move on from this??? All in all, I enjoyed reading Reckless. If you enjoyed Powerless, I would still suggest that you read this, but just have the proper expectations going into it. Can't wait for Fearless to come out to see how this ends! This is just another romance novel, filled with all the familiar tropes: the single bed at the inn, forced proximity, sharing one horse, the protective "touch-her-and-you-die" stance, and more. Despite the mixed reviews, I enjoyed Powerless. However, after waiting an entire year for the sequel, book 2 was... well, underwhelming. What I enjoyed about this book: - The relationship between Paedyn and Kai. - How Kai's internal struggle is explored - The chapters on Kitt and his challenges as the new king - The rain scene - The poppy field scene - The ending (although predictable) Reasons why I got bored while reading this book: - The novel's reliance on the romantic tropes felt overused. - Didn't feel like I was reading a fantasy novel. - The repetitive cycle of Pae and Kai's cat-and-mouse game. - The continuous banter that eventually gets exhausting tbh. Here's how I would summarize Reckless. Potential spoilers ahead! - Paedyn runs while Kai chases her. - Kai captures Paedyn and starts the journey back to Ilya. - Kai is the prisoner and Paedyn is the captor. - "I want to kill you but I can't" (repeat 10,000 times). - They're both running away together now. - They present themselves in front of the new king. - Cliffhanger with a predictable ending. - The end. Will I read Book 3? Well, yes, because having already read the first two books, it would be a shame not to complete the series. But the main reason would probably be Kai :D If you're a big fan of enemies-to-lovers, no-spice romance filled with banter, flirting, and swoon-worthy moments, you'll love Reckless. |
