Loading... Sh*t My Dad Says (edition 2010)by Justin Halpern (Author)I love everything about this book -- from the way it's organized to the hysterical content to the unfolding relationship between father and son. I love the author's writing style, so casual and conversational. If you need something lighthearted & easy to read in a couple if settings, this is your book! But keep in mind, it's filled with curse words. The charming old man was not edited, which makes the stories within that much funnier! Road trip audiobook! But I only made it a little halfway before arriving home . . . so then it became . . . Grocery store audiobook! This was a pleasant diversion on the drive and while I waited for COVID and flu shots at HyVee and did my weekly shopping. Justin Halpern's dad says funny things. Sometimes they're just strung out like the Twitter feed from which they originated, sometimes they're fleshed out into a four- to eight-page story that digs a little deeper into the author's life. Short and funny. And it reminds me of one of the funniest things I heard a dad say. During college, the father of my roommate, Jeff, had just met his girlfriend and at the first opportunity he had to take his son aside he said, "Jeff, Eleanor is a great girl. The kind I want you to marry . . . but not now." With the grumpy father that I have in my life I thought that it was very logical that I should read this book. You know when you read the right book at just the right time? This was that book at this time for me. I need a laugh and to feel tied to family and this book was perfect. So many funny stories, not for the faint of heart re: the language, mind you. I kind of like that though. My dad is a truck driver and I have four much older brothers. Off colour language has never been a problem for me. Justin Halpern took the things his dad said and started a Twitter page with the things his dad said and was so well received that it became a book. there are some funny things that his dad says. I liked the book it was a very easy read and some funny parts. My favorite chapter was the last chapter where Halpren's dad really opens up to him. I picked up this for a quick read while visiting the library and read through it in an hour or so. There is a lot of swearing in this book, the F word is used numeruous times and knowing these are actual quotes I cant help but think that it must have been something of an ordeal living with someone who exploded in cursing all the time. Some of the stories made me smile slightly, but I found myself able to hold my laughter throughout the most of the book. It wasnt truly horrible just nothing special and also a little bit uncomfortable. Maybe if the author had chosen a different way to tell it,as it is now its comparable to having someone tell you stories about their family and relatives, insisting "omg it was so funny, but I guess you had to be there" I think it would have been better as a full book with a clear narrative. And less cursing. We’ve all heard the expression “laugh out loud’ funny. Well, I can testify under oath that this book meets that standard. When I read this book I laughed uncontrollably at various time. And my reason may be different than most. The author writes from the perspective of a young man reminiscing about his unreasonable father. Naturally, I found the observations of the son amusing. But I also related to the unreasonable Dad, because as a father of four (the two youngest of which are hilarious boys) the highly educated, foul mouthed Dad reminded me of me. This book is a joy. Some day, when one of my boys writes a similar novel about me, I expect that I will appear just as rigid and comical (and, I hope, as beloved and wonderful). I adored this book. When you look at a thumbnail of Sam Halpern*, author Justin Halpern's dad, you imagine that he would talk just like narrator Sean Schemmel. You have to listen to the book. Don't read it. However, don't just get caught in the laughter, the book has a lot of great things to say about family and life. It's sneaky deep. Remember, listen to it. * View at Twitter account Justin@shitmydadsays. Offensive? Sure! Hilarious? Also sure. Plus, there are some legitimate words of wisdom his dad offers - I just won't repeat them here... It's a quick read and funny, but maybe not for the easily offended. Worth noting - his father and mother were both pretty high level professionals, so it's more just his dad's unusual communication style. And his dad does show up in a few different spots to be more than just a foul mouth. He seems to be a genuinely good guy who just happens to curse like a sailor and say hilarious things as he doles out wisdom. The book had me chuckling throughout, and laughing out loud more than a few times. Aptly titled, the book is about the sh*t his dad says. The quotes / stories are sometimes gruff, always blunt, and without pretence. His dad is a simple guy, very straightforward, and one of those "what you see is what you get" kind of guys. The book was very short, easy to read, and I was sorry to get to the end. I also recommend the audiobook version, since the reader is excellent and gives life to the various characters through his voices. |
