Loading... Pocket Poems (edition 2004)by Bobbi Katz, Marilyn Hafner (Illustrator)This book is a great read for Poetry Month. It’s a great mixture of poems by many famous poets like Emily Dickinson, Nikki Giovanni, Emily George, and of course Bobbi Katz. This is a great ELA teacher book. Pair it with a Poem in your pocket activity from Crayola https://www.crayola.com/crafts/poem-in-my-pocket-craft/ Pocket Poems offers students the opportunity to see different style of poems all 8 lines or less. This can be used for the student literacy enhancment along with their understanding of poetry. This book can also be used for different lessons throughout the classroom with different styles of learning as it presents information in a new way. Too simple, no depth. If a poem is worth pocketing and memorizing, it should be either part of our iconic cultural heritage (think Mother Goose) or say something worth pondering. A few of these qualified, but most were instantly forgettable. But I did find a new-to-me Eve Merriam, so I'm glad I got it from the library. Poetry can be very powerful. It can take you through so many emotions. I love the idea of just carrying around a poem in your pocket for when you are feel down, alone or just bored. “Keep a poem in your pocket/ and a picture in your head/ and you’ll never feel lonely/ at night when you’re in bed.”This book is a collection of short little pocket sized poems of various topics, from space to seahorses. If I were to keep a poem in my pocket from this collection, it would have to be “English is a Pain!(Pane?).” The poem is about how different words sound the same but are spelled differently (homophones). I love this poem because it’s funny and cute. Also, I completely agree, English is a pain! Summary: This book has several poems from several different authors. They are short and simple with colorful bright illustrations. Personal Reaction: I like this book. I think the variety of poems helps keep the reader reading. I like how at the end of the book readers are encouraged to keep a poem in their pocket. Extension Ideas: write poems.Discuss different styles of poetry. Pocket Poems is a collection of poems for children. It has silly poems, bedtime poems, and season poems. The poems are very short and quickly read. Pocket Poems is a fun and silly Book of Poems. I love that it has a poem for everyday life. The art work is wonderful in Pocket poems. The poems are very rhythmic, and would be easy for children to repeat. Each poem has its own tone and style to it. I would have the children write a poem. I would have them pick a poem and tell what they like or did not like about it. Pocket Poems was a book full of great "kid sized" poems. All the poems were short and sweet and most importantly appealing to kids. These books were about nature, games, animals, mystic creatures and much more. My favorite part of this book was that the poems were funny enough to make me laugh. Overall simple and sweet. Author(Selected By): Bobbi Katz Title: Pocket Poems Illustrator: Marylin Hafner Publisher: Dutton Children's Books 2004 28 pages Literary Genre: Poetry Throught out this poety book there were 53 small poems all by different authors. Some of these poems were cute and funny for young kids. I think if someone wanted to read a few poems out of it every now and then it would be fun but to sit down and read the whole book in one setting might get a little boring. Summary by Gedell Ellington this book is about many different poems that res simple to put into your pocket. The poems were excellently put together and lots of colors to draw young children in. My Personal Summary: I enjoyed the poems in this book and actually used this to read to my daughter when I was trying to give her filling for poems. Classroom Extension this would be a great book of poems to have around for first and second graders. The poems are simple enough for them to understand and get the rhythm. The genre of this book is poetry and it is fictional. The art in this book is very colorful and hand-drawn. It is painted with water colors. There is no theme throughout the book, but the first poem does talk about keeping a poem in your pocket, and the last poem is similar. A few of the poems were similar to other poems like "humpty dumpty" and "twinkle twinkle little star", just with different words. The rhythm is the same just different words. I would say the reading level is probably second or third grade because it is not very difficult, but I do not know if younger kids would understand poetry. The curricular connections in this book are; rhyming, poetry forms, and line stanzas. It would be good to read this book during English or Language Arts since it has to do with words of poetry. This is a great poetry collection for elementary students. The variety and selection of poems in this book really appeals to kids! My students love this book. The playful and colorful illustrations really appeal to the kids too. One can find Dickinson, Sandburg and Fisher . . . as well as other less well known poets. Many of my students chose poems from this book to add to their poetry notebooks. |
