Once I Ate a Pie (original 2006; edition 2010)by Patricia MacLachlan, Emily MacLachlan Charest, Katy Schneider (Illustrator){My Thoughts} – This a a neat little poetry like book about dogs. The short little poems describe each of the dogs. It is amazing how different each dog can be in terms of the things they like, their background, their job, their personality and more. This book helps children to know that each dog is different but they are each special in their own ways. The words within the book go hand and hand with the illustrations. The illustrations help to bring the words on the pages into a more believable perspective. I really enjoyed it because I like animals and I like poetry. I can’t wait until I let my children read it, because I am certain they will enjoy it also. This is a fun collection of free verse poetry written from the perspectives of the dogs. Each page is a poem told from another dog. I could see using this book to teach 2nd graders how to write free verse poetry and also teach the elements of free verse poetry. We could talk a lot about how the words move on the page and why they are so artistic. As a dog lover, I found this to be a perfect book to describe all different types of dogs! I laughed at every single page, which made me want to keep reading. I enjoyed how each page was a different (short) story of a new dog and their personality. I was able to relate many of this dogs with my dog, which made it that much enjoyable to read, especially when the older dog was reminiscing on his younger days frolicking in the grass and playing all day every day. The message of this book is that all dogs are different, but still have wonderful lives and their own personalities. All dogs are smart in their own way, and have strengths, which were demonstrated in this book. The personalities of each of the dogs were so realistic, which made it so entertaining to read! I couldn't stop. |
