Last Wolf Standing (Silhouette Nocturne) (edition 2008)by Rhyannon ByrdI spent a lot of time listening to this book and this it was a little “cheesy” but I was having a very stressful time at work so it was actually just what I needed to relax on my commute home. That in itself probably saved it a star along with the fact that the supporting characters seem to be more intriguing than the two main ones. The universe and setting the author created were very good and I like the mythology around the wolves and how the hierarchy of the pack works. The other bloodrunners were immediately likeable and is the only that kept me going during some points in the book. The two main characters were just okay and I’m good with that but I didn’t really feel like I was invested in their relationship. My biggest issue was the conflict and bad guy. I thought he was a little lame and was really getting worn out waiting for it to all be over. I just didn’t see why Mason didn’t end it sooner. I also had an issue with the blood bond – it gave the story a twinge of ickiness. The two characters are chosen life mates and the whole love thing seems to be just a side note so it was hard to decide if Torrance and Mason were actually in love or just bonded. I will be continuing the series as I am interested in seeing how the other bloodrunner’s stories go. The author did create a unique, diverse of characters among the bloodrunners. Mason and his Bloodrunner partner walk into a crowed coffee shop to get a bite to eat before continuing their hunt of a rogue werewolf. All of a sudden he smells her, his true mate. Once he finds her in the crowd coffee cafe he is so determine not to let her leave that he trips her. While Mason is hot and yummy, Torrance has had nothing but trouble since meeting him. Not only does he trip her and makes her spill her soup all over herself but he has accidently led a dangerous rogue werewolf to her. Mason is trying to protect her from the rogue while protecting his heart from loving Tory. A great start to an intriguing and yet humorous paranormal romance series! I quite enjoyed the story and found it to be not to short or too long. Looking forward to reading more about the Bloodrunners. Mason and his partner walk into a crowed coffee house and all he can scent is a woman - not just any woman but his true mate, a woman designed for him. Unable to control himself fully he needs her, wants her and just can't let her walk out of his life without a word, so he does the unthinkable and takes the woman down. Torrance is down on the floor, her shirt spilled with soup and a hot as hell bad boy next to her asking if she's alright. Now this is slightly tricky, see Torrance has made up her mind about men, especially good looking men like this stranger, she won't turn into her mother and change boyfriends like shirts no matter how hot the shirt. She's determined to only accept the one man, her dream guy, who'll love her unconditionally and forever, one nightstand are out of the question. It turns out bad guy is also little bit mental, telling her she has to follow him right away and get the hell out of dodge, thanks to the bustling coffee house she manages to escape, but she isn't out of the woods yet, before she knows she's being attacked by a sadistic, bent on eating humans, werewolf - and it turns out the coffee house nutjob hottie ain't quite so insane after all, more like a werewolf himself. And she's stuck between a war of sides. Mason, wanting nothing more than Tory follows her tries to get her to see reason - that he is what she needs to survive, also he's quite set on getting her to bed as well, but that's all, he's not going to turn soft just because he's found his mate, he's not built for love, but he sure wants her - so imagine the fun that comes from her saying no. The uneasy couple has to come to terms in what exactly is their relationship and what do they want and what can they eventually have... does love make you weaker or stronger? This book was so much fun to read, I was up late at night cause it just had such a fun story to read, action and blooming attraction and Mason trying to keep a lid on his emotions towards Tory, and Tory trying to fight getting too intimate with a werewolf for the protection of her heart. This book just came out in Finland, and apparently has two more books coming out, one of the today, so yes I'll be picking that one up as well. ;) Great fun read, easy to finish in 24 hours! @ http://niinas-reading-and-reviewing.blogspot.com/2011/08/review-last-wolf-standi... Mason never belived that true love would effect him, until he met Torrance in a coffee shop and had a sudden driving need for her. When the rogue werewolf he's hunting finds out about Torrance he can't ignore this feeling, he has to save her. It's pretty predictable and if there was any more testostorone involved it would be very dangerous for all involved. Diverting but nothing that stands it out from the crowd, I do plan to read more in this series but I wouldn't be terribly upset if I didn't manage to find them. First he tripped her...made her spill her soup all over herself. Now she's being stalked by a murderous werewolf! And it's all his fault!! As soon as he smelled her, he had to have her. Now his enemy is _targeting her...and she's scared of the dark, much less werewolves. Elements of humor, hot passion, and a good lead-in to the upcoming 2nd book in Byrd's series. **Courtesy of CK2S Kwips & Kritiques** Whether Wolf or human, Mason Dillinger has never had to work at attracting a woman before - females have just naturally flocked to him. Now he has found his mate - however unwillingly - and he must actually woo the woman, all while keeping her fragile human body in one piece. See, there's this rogue werewolf Mason is hunting, and that rogue would like nothing better than to exact his vengeance on Mason by destroying everything he loves. But Mason isn't new to this game. As a Blood Runner, he's old hat at tracking and killing rogue werewolves - those that have developed a penchant for killing humans. And with the beautiful Torry's pretty neck on the line, Mason will stop at nothing to ensure her safety - even if it means his own life. When the trail of the killer points to a threat much larger than one lone rogue werewolf, it will take everything he's got to keep them both alive. Rhyannon Byrd was one of the first authors I discovered when I began reading the romance genre almost two years ago. With captivating plotlines and engaging characters, she immediately became one of my favorite romance writers. When I heard she had finally published several books through major New York publisher Silhouette Nocturne, I was beyond ecstatic, both for her and for myself, as a fan of her work. While her eBook releases have been wonderful, this new avenue in her career can only mean good things for her fans. More exposure equals more sales, which means more books - it is a win-win for both author and fans, right? *grin* So now that you know how much I admire Rhyannon Byrd's previous work, let me tell you that the first book in her Blood Runners series, Last Wolf Standing, more than pleased me. She has done a beautiful job of conforming to Silhouette Nocturne's standard while still retaining her own writing voice. This series is the tale of a werewolf pack, specifically the half-breeds - part human, part shifter - and their work to ferret out the growing menace to both the human and the shifter community. The half-breeds are looked down on by the pureblood shifters, who mandate that each half-breed must serve as a Blood Runner, hunting rogue werewolves. Only once each Blood Runner has caught a certain number of rogue shifters are they accepted into the pack with full rights. Half-breed Mason Dillinger wants no part of the pack with its myriad politics or a commitment of any kind. He hunts the rogues for his own satisfaction, out of his own sense of responsibility and justice. The life he leads is not suited to that of a man with something to lose - like a mate. Needless to say, when he accidentally finds his own mate, he is ill-prepared for the moment, leading to a hilarious scene between him and Torrance. To the readers' never-ending entertainment, Mason is at a loss concerning how to approach his mate from the get-go. Of course, when it comes to the physical part of their relationship, he more than gains the upper hand... Torry has no defense for the intense sensuality between them, or Mason's skill in this area. Torry is a bit of a loner. She has a few very close friends, but outside them, she keeps to herself. Although she's dated in the past, nothing could prepare her for the force of nature that is Mason. Regardless, it doesn't take her long to stand up to the intimidating Blood Runner, and she proves she can more than keep him on his toes over the long haul. Both Mason and Torry grow throughout the course of this story. Torry finds a core of inner strength she previously had no cause to call on. Mason finds it within himself to love someone else - something he didn't think possible. Watching their individual journeys alongside the one they take together is absolutely inspiring. Throughout the book, the plot twists more and more, with new mysteries brought to light even as others are solved. While we enjoy a very happy ending for Torry and Mason's romance, Ms. Byrd leaves us with immense anticipation for the answers the next book in this fascinating trilogy will bring regarding the ongoing storyline that arcs through the Blood Runners stories. Last Wolf Standing is sure to be an instant hit with lovers of paranormal romance, especially those with a penchant for sexy shape shifter stories! Bravo to Rhyannon Byrd for a thrilling entry in the Silhouette Nocturne line!
