Loading... Surrender my love (edition 1994)by Johanna LindseyNearly the entire book is straight friction between two characters over kind of a flimsy misunderstanding. It really seemed like the couple was allergic to talking through conflict and spent all their time just taking turns reacting to the other. A whole scad of drama that could have been avoided with a conversation or two just isn't as much my sort of thing. Putting that aside though, even if the misunderstood circumstance *had* been true, the punishment still seemed worse than the crime. They kind of shrug it off and minimize it in the end, but the revenge-seeking had been considerable to my mind, even if largely psychological rather than physical. And it ended up making him just seem fragile too, like the real injury was to his feelings rather than person, because she was a woman and women always coo over his beauty but she didn't. The absolute gall! ... All of these things robbed a fair amount of my enjoyment from the story. AUTHOR: JOHANNA LINDSEY is a Romance, Historical Fiction, Fantasy writer. Book (1) FIRES OF WINTER took you from the Celtics of Wales to the Vikings of Norway. Book (2) HEARTS AFLAME from the Vikings of Norway to the Saxons of Wessex. This book SURRENDER MY LOVE from Saxons of Wessex to East Anglia the home of Danes & Saxons SEXUAL EXPLICITNESS ***compared to the previous two books, this was LightWeight ** (marital relationship) “….his manhood was revealed….” (and) “….pleasure drawn from each thrust…” GENRE: Romance, Historical Fiction. SETTING: Wessex and East Anglia 879 A.D. CENTRAL CHARACTERS: SELIG HAARDRAD is first born to Garrick and Brenna Haardrag. His features are more like his Celtic mother as opposed to his Norwegian father. He spends his time traveling between Norway and his newly built residence near his brother-in-law and sister’s Wessex manor. ERIKA HARALDSSON, a Dane, lives with and manages her brother’s manor in East Anglia. Her personality is civil as compared to being authoritative and she is exceptionally beautiful. SYNOPSIS: Selig voluntarily travels to the Danish King on a mission for Saxon King Alfred. His group is attacked on the way and Selig is left for dead. Having been revived, he seeks shelter at the Haraldsson manor where he is tortured and accused of being a spy rather than being welcomed. Selig’s sister rescues him and takes him severely wounded back to Wessex along with Erika Haraldsson by way of a knife at her throat. WHAT I LIKED: Erika’s shadow is a great person to know IF you want your neck broken. Kristen is a handful (just like her mother). Sexual descriptions toned down as compared to previous (2) books in this series. WHAT I DID NOT LIKE: Did not like the way that the circumstances surrounding Selig’s initial rescue were written. I give this book (4) stars. This series continues to be on my fav list. This author is on my fav list. I appreciate that the author chose to lessen the powerful sexual narratives in this book as compared to the previous (2) books. Selig, a Norwegian Viking, has decided to build his home near his sister in Wessex. While on a journey as a translator, representing the King of Wessex and traveling to visit the Danish Vikings, his group is attacked. Everyone is killed except Selig who has suffered a severe blow to the head. A passerby on her way to East Anglia, feeling sorry for him, cares for him while he is unconscious. When he comes to, however, he wanders to a nearby manor where he is accused of being a spy. Still suffering from a head wound, he says some things to the lady of the manor to upset her, and she has a lashing ordered for him. Upset with herself, Erika tries to stop the lashing, but it is too late. When Kristen, Selig's sister discovers where he is being held, she comes to his rescue. As she is taking her brother home, she also takes Erika back as Selig's prisoner. Selig keeps her as a prisoner and tries to humiliate her for what she did to him, but they eventually fall in love with one another. |
