Bliadhna Mhath Ur dhan a h-uile! I hope everyone is rested and refreshed after a good break, and rarin' to read Gaelic.

It's about time for, you know, New Year's Resolutions. Do you have one for reading Gaelic?

Like, maybe, I will read some Gaelic every day in 2011. ANY amount counts - one word counts.

Or, I will complete one Gaelic book this year. It could be a child's picture book, or a novel, or anything in between.

Or (and I'd love it if this was it) I will post something on Reading Gaidhlig at least once a month. Or once, would be nice.

I'm going to read something from every Gaelic book I own and haven't read, or haven't read for so long I can't remember anything about it. And by something, I mean at least a page. And it includes any new acquisitions.

Any other ideas?

I did look at Cha Sgeul Ruin E, a collection of short stories, over the holidays. Yet again, the best story was one by chrichtonsmithiain::Iain Chrichton Smith.

It concerns his favourite character (and alter ego?) Murchadh. He moves out of his home into a bedsit in order to get away from the ever present TV and do some reading.

It works. But after a short time, he misses the lack of home comforts, and goes back home. He finds his wife has moved the TV to another room, and spends all her time reading.

It's easy to read (I didn't have a dictionary to hand, but there was nothing that couldn't be guessed) and it was a simple story, simply told, with a certain wry humour. Like all the best stories by ICS, however, it expands afterwards in the mind, revealing its true richness.

So, did you get any Gaelic books for Christmas? Do you have a New Year's Resolution involving reading Gaelic? Raise the stakes and post it here - you'll find plenty of support and encouragement!

Leughadh sona dhuibh ann an 2011 - happy reading in 2011!

Bliadhna Mhath Ur to all, as above, except it's 2013 and I still haven't kept my 2011 resolution. Still, it is a new year and anything can happen. I'll resolve to work out, post, and tag my books with a five word score.

Then, I will have done some Gaelic reading, and be able to rank my books by ease of reading. Will I do any better this year? Will you? Watch this space! And best of luck with your reading in 2013.
