I just finished my HP rererereread for the last movie!! I finished them in time!! I might start reading the Harry schoolbooks and The Tales of Beedle the Bard, I don't want to start anything new before the movie...

I'm reading Anne Baker Nancy's War its a family saga based in Merseyside UK. I do want to read Harry Potter again, so much falls away when watching the films, the books are the real magic for me.

I read Hold Me Closer, Necromancer yesterday, and now I've started No and Me, which is definitely a change of pace.

Finished HBP last night (I *still* get teary, despite multiple readings!), and am now zipping through The Sugar Queen for book club so I can get started with DH before the movie opens!

I finished State of Wonder yesterday. Not as good as Bel Canto, but I still really liked it and would recommend it. Now I am reading The Throne of Fire.

I've been listening to the audio version of State of Wonder. I've been skipping ahead a lot if that tells you anything.

Jul 6, 2011, 3:54 pm

>grkmwk I loved The Sugar Queen and other books by that author. That should be a good discussion.

I'm right near the end of Janet Evanovich's Smokin' Seventeen, and about to start 84 Charing Cross Road.

Hey foggi!

I'm still working on Dead in the family, but I've picked up GoF and into the wild, which I just cant like no matter what.

#11 suge:
Long time no see. I can't believe you hadn't read Into the Wild yet. It's been in your TBR pile for at least three years!

I'm jealous of everyone's HP rereads and wish I had the time for a reread of the complete series as well. I've decided I may reread between summer and October . . .

Lately I've been reading my ER book, The Butterflies. I'm afraid I can't remember who the author is and my touchstones are still not working for me so I can't link it. It's a YA novel about a burn victim who burned as a child and is coping with the aftermath as a teenager.

Jul 7, 2011, 4:03 pm

Hi K! Ahhh you know how it is with TBR piles, they have a mind of their own, they just grow and grow. The book chooses the reader Kerian , and so far into the wild hadn't chosen me. And I wish it hadn't, as it turned out!

I just finished Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. Can someone tell me how I'm supposed to make even a tiny ding in my To Be Read pile when almost everything I read has a sequel or series. GAHHHH!

Jul 7, 2011, 10:48 pm

I read The Odyssey and Ithaka right after that as a companion. Ithaka was pretty good, but the end had me sobbing.
Now I'm reading Perchance to Dream, which I LOVE. Lots of laugh out loud moments.

Jul 8, 2011, 3:31 pm

I am reading Patron Saint of Liars. I have read all of Ann Patchett's other books but somehow missed this one. This is what Year of the Woman Author is all about. (Bel Canto is still my favorite of hers.)

18compskibook
Jul 8, 2011, 5:05 pm

I didn't like Patron Saint of Liars or The Magician's Assistant, but I like Run. I had read the first two hoping for another Bel Canto. If they didn't have to live up to that, I may have liked them better.

I've read half of Dead Reckoning. I'll have to find an excuse to go off my meds again so I can read the other half ;)

Jul 9, 2011, 6:46 pm

I'm sure if we all put our heads together we can think up an excuse for you, MsD. And luckily, there is still some superglue left in the Derailed Thoughts thread...

I'm reading What the Night Knows. It's a book I never thought I would read, but someone told me it has a good representation of a homeschooling family in it. Still waiting to read that part, and it's really hard for me to get past the murder descriptions. :oP

Eight whole days without any books finished...or perhaps we're all just busy. ;)

Butterflies (see post #12) was pretty nice. I want to get a copy for the hospital my mom works in. I wrote about it last week on my book challenge thread if anyone would like to read it.

I started reading Obernewtyn on my cell phone just because now I can actually do that. ;) I haven't gotten far but it looks interesting. I'm reading it using the Kobo app, and something interesting about Kobo's 'Reading Life' thing they've installed into the app as well as the newest Kobo ereader (not on mine) is that it doesn't necessarily work well with awards. It told me I won an award for reading all night after I opened a book past midnight and read for a mere twenty minutes. It was a little disappointing. My mother heard about the app from me, downloaded it, bought an ebook on it...and says it loads very slow, so it's best to not buy ebooks over the phone app.

I started reading The Magicians last week, too, except I forgot it at work. The beginning, which is all I've read so far, made me think of the Chronicles of Narnia a bit. The day I forgot my book, I got a book recommendation from a co-worker of a book in my TBR pile - Halo - so I started that and have since finished it. I haven't read many books with angels in them, but this is my favorite so far. I can't wait for the second book release next month. The writer's gifted, in my opinion. She was just seventeen when the book was published, but one wouldn't know it by her writing. Some of the emotions were captured so well! Part of this book requires tissue.

Oops! I actually did a lot of reading over the past week, and particularly this weekend -- just didn't post about it. Brief thoughts on each:

The False Princess -- not a fairy-tale retelling, but much like one in style and plot. I liked it, but did not love it.
A Web of Air -- sequel to Fever Crumb, and think I actually liked it better than its predecessor. Both are set in a really interesting post-apocalyptic world.
The Kneebone Boy -- a slightly gothic story featuring three plucky young siblings and a mysterious castle. Lots of fun!
Lola and the Boy Next Door -- teen romance, and an ER book so I need to write a real review while it's still fresh in my mind. It was fun and fluffy, and I think this relatively new author is going places.
Okay for Now -- one of the best books I've read this year, and probably a contender for the Newbery medal. For more info, you can read my review.
Kat, Incorrigible -- A Regency fantasy with a 12-year-old protagonist. I found it lacking in depth and originality. It was a fun read, but it didn't make me want to continue with the rest of the series.

Now I'm reading Blameless by Gail Carriger, third in the Parasol Protectorate series. It's good so far!

I've paused my DH reread until after I see the final movie today, and in the interim will soon start Becoming Odyssa: Epic Adventures on the Appalachian Trail. Written by a friend of two friends, I have high hopes!

Kerian, if I open a book in my house, people magically appear and start talking to me or ask me questions. If they don't, the phone rings. I'm not sure if I'm making it happen or if it just happens, but it always happens. That's why it's taken me a week to get a few chapters into The Good, the Bad, and the Undead!

#28: In her defense, she's been pushing the book on me all evening trying to get me to catch up with her. I hate to tell her that the only way I would catch up is if I'm left in a well-lit, soundproofed room with nothing but a cushioned but not too comfy chair. And that isn't a guarantee that I won't be distracted by a piece of lint that curls in a certain way that it reminds me of something important I should be doing or contemplating. :oP

I finished my re-read of DH - and the entire Harry Potter series - yesterday. I'm glad my timing was off and I didn't finish the re-read until after I saw the final movie.

I'm still reading and enjoying Becoming Odyssa.

This month so far I've read:
Hush, Hush
The Princess and the Snowbird (disappointed in this one)
Chasing Lincoln's Killer
Pride and Prejudice (lost the number this reread is)
So You Want to become a National Board Certified Teacher
I know there are a few more, but I can't remember which ones! I'm almost ready for a closet/bookshelf makeover, so maybe I can organize a little more.

Right now I'm reading:
Crescendo
Tuck
and 3 teacher books that I have to have read by August 10th.

So far this weekend, I finished listening to The Wake of the Lorelei Lee, and finished reading A Tale Dark and Grimm. Both were good reads! Not sure what I'll read next -- I have several options at the moment.

#34: What did you think of Hush, Hush, kirby? that book sometimes catches my eye at the bookstore but I'm not very convinced I'll like it.

I finished The Reckoning, which is the final book in the The Darkest Powers trilogy, it was really good, the last one had me glued till the end. I have started Hija de la Fortuna (Daughter of Fortune) and I may start reading the third book in the Sookie Stackhouse series so I can watch the third season of the show :P....

Mostly dramaturgical research but I did sneak in reading A Discovery of Witches which was okay- probably Twilight fans will like it, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children which I enjoyed a lot, the old photos made it I am not sure the story would have been as good without them, and i just finished The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of her own Making which I really liked it is whimsical, wistful and surprisingly moving.

#30 sarahy:
James Patterson was once one of my favorite authors, but I haven't read anything by him in about ten years. He did, however, have a character that was a teenage girl named Max in When the Wind Blows. Some things about her have often made me wonder if she's the same girl as in that series! I've been meaning to find out.

#33 wingert:
I loved Divergent! Enjoy reading it. :)

#34 kirby:
I'd also like to hear what you think of Hush, Hush.

#38 Alisha:
Can I ask if you've read The Princess Bride? ;)

After finishing Obernewtyn, I strongly feel it strikes me as a book I'd ordinarily really enjoy. However, the author too often skipped days to weeks at a time for which, had she written the scenes of, would have really made the story more powerful. I'm giving the second book, Farseekers, a chance on my phone.

#40 - I can't say that I have actually read The Princess Bride, but I have seen the movie. I show probably check my local library for that one, and read, perhaps after I read all the ones I just bought.

In addition to Becoming Odyssa: Epic Adventures on the Appalachian Trail, which is wonderful despite the increasing wanderlust making me want to go hiking in the mountains, I've also started reading Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. I'm only a short way into it, but it's powerful.

Just finished The Goose Girl. Really, really outstanding. I picked it up at a book sale so I didn't expect much from it but it was lovely. Definitely one I'll reread often. Foggi, have you read this? I think you'd love it as much as I did.

It was also part of that YA Fantasy Showdown last summer! I've meant to read it, but it's still part of my TBR pile.

#48 wingert:
Not spell-o-tape? ;)

The Obernewtyn series does seem to pick up from book one. I enjoyed Farseekers enough read book three, Ashling, as well, which just seemed to get better. I'm now eager to read the next book.
