Novel about guy who loves the cinema

This might be easy b/c I believe it's a pretty famous novel, I just can't remember the name or author for the life of me.

I only remember reading the beginning so I don't know much about the plot. It's about this guy who spends way too much time going to the cinema. The guy also has a girlfriend...lol I'm sorry but that's all I can remember. I seem to remember it taking place in the 50s or 60s but I could be wrong about that. It's not a new book.
