Barefoot, I've walked this path by night for nearly twenty years, most of my life it seems, the earth pressing up against the arch of my foot. More often than not, I leave my flashlight behind, to let the path carry me home through the Adriondack darkness. My feet touching the ground are like fingers on the piano, playing from memory an old sweet song, of pine needles and sand.

Of late years an abundant shower of curates has fallen upon the north of England: they lie very thick on the hills; every parish has one or more of them; they are young enough to be very active, and ought to be doing a great deal of good. But not of late years are we about to speak; we are going back to the beginning of this century: late years—present years are dusty, sunburnt, hot, arid; we will evade the noon, forget it in siesta, pass the midday in slumber, and dream of dawn.

Charlotte Bronte, Shirley. The really underrated Bronte novel. I love its satire of both Anglican clergy and the Dissenters (especially the "confrontation" on the road to the Sunday school picnic, and also the character of Peter Augustus Malone). The opening sentence makes this "shower of curates" sound like the Biblical plague of locusts.

According to the work page (your touchstone), the first sentence is, "My father trusted me with the details of his death."

Either way, it seems to be an interesting book and I remember liking Jodi Picoult's another book so adding it to my TBR list.

Echoes of the War

“ Three nice old ladies and a criminal, who is even nicer, are discussing the war over a cup of tea. The criminal, who is the hostess, calls it a dish of tea, which shows that she comes from Caledonia, but that is not her crime.”
