What do you make of Duncan and Mr. Mundy's relationship/arrangement? Is Duncan basically still in prison (with Mr. Mundy continuing as his jailer) even after he's been released?

I agree with that assessment. Duncan seems unable to move past his feelings of guilt over Alex.

>2 LynnB: So is he trying to atone? Or does he just not have a better option? It sounded like going back home to live with his father was a non-starter.

I was rather appalled by Mr. Mundy's relationship with Duncan. Or am I reading something into it (ie that there was a sexual element) that wasn't there? It seemed to me like Mr. Mundy _targeted Duncan in jail and made sure Duncan saw him as the only option once he was out of jail.

I agree with gypsysmom, I was creeped out at the thought that Mr Mundy was somehow taking advantage of Duncan. Duncan, was very fragile and maybe Mundy was a protector in a sense, but definitely was in control. Duncan I think just gave into Mundy as his protector and appeared to be obligated to him. I wasn't happy with that relationship at all and I don't think it was an ideal place for Duncan, but given the story, it seemed that he did not have an option to go back home to his father or that house where the incident occurred.
