I've devoured every John Sanford thrillers and can't wait for the next. In the meantime any suggestions for a similar writer. I've read all Michael Connelly, and some others. I need more names. Anyone? Please!

Depends on why you like Sanford, really. If it's the police procedural thing or the lone operator thing or the serial killer thing.

John Sandford police procedurals are complex and often surprising. They are all set in Minnesota and the author paints a picture of the landscape, lifestyle, climate, and people that are familiar yet different. The crimes are often brutal but the details necessary to get you to the conclusion are page-turning. His Prey series with Lucas Davenport as the lead investigator have never let me down. The family life the author builds for him is often as interesting as the crimes he attempts to solve.

Sandford added Virgil Flowers, a hippie type investigator who now has his own series of books, and Kidd a computer whizz series that I find not as interesting.

The plots are intricate and just plain well written. Other authors I love are Michael Connelly, Daniel Silva, Deborah Crombie, Jo Nesbo, many British mystery writers and others in that genre. They pull me in and don't let me go until the last word on the last page.

I've gone to the readalikes page but there are not enough ratings to help.

I have and have read all the Sandford books from the two big series, and others, so I love him, too, but am not into the other authors you mentioned, so FWIW -

You might dig the Crais series featuring Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. They start in the 80s and work to the present day and there is definitely a longer story arc to follow, but back then there wasn't as much emphasis on that as there is today. The Monkey's Raincoat is the first one.

I have a love-hate relationship with Deaver's novels and I only read the Lincoln Rhyme series. They are twisty and crazy and Rhyme's character gets on my nerves a lot, but I still read them. The Bone Collector is the first one. His books are pretty scene-driven and dialogue heavy the way Sandford's are. More forensics though, lots of whiteboarding.

Have an on-again-off-again relationship with both Nevada Barr's series featuring Anna Pigeon and Linda Barnes's series featuring Carlotta something or other. Barr's books are set in various national parks as you follow Anna from one ranger job to another, the body count is always high and sometimes the books are pretty violent. I think the first one is The Track of the Cat.

Barnes's books are set in Boston and Carlotta, Carlyle I think, is a cabbie and a private eye. They're funny without the stupid of a Stephanie Plum. No, Carlotta is actually competent and plays a mean national steel. I can't remember the first one, but know there's one called Cold Case that might be near the start.

My favorite of the Sandford books is the Kidd series!

jldgaren, there you go. But we both love John Sandford.

I'm a series freak anyway and tend to enjoy thrillers, some espionage, and even lovely reads such as those put out by Louise Penny. I do wish the sites that offer read-alike authors, titles, series, leading character would be a little more efficient. If you know of one that works, please let me know. In the meantime, I rely on LT readers to guide me.
