Welcome back and good luck with your ROOTing!

Welcome back and have a great reading year! :)

So far, I have read:
History of Danish Dreams
Le testament syriaque
and
Inspired: slaying giants, walking on water, and loving the Bible again
I wasn't too impressed by the first two. Both could have done with some editing! I enjoyed Inspired, but not as much as Rachel Held Evans' other books. My favourite is A Year of Biblical Womanhood.

It should update everywhere you use the same ticker. Sometimes it takes a while or you have to refresh the page. I hope this helps.

I have forgotten the PIN for my old ticker, so here's a new one. I have saved the new password in my password manager, so next time I should be able to get this right!
Edit: this ticker updates as I read more ROOTs. See the last message for my most recent reading.
I have been ROOTing quite a bit recently.
I have read:
Home Cooking: the pleasures of simple food which I loved. It was fun to read about life and food in the 1980s. Laurie Colwin's voice really appeals to me. It was a lovely comforting book, but not complete escapism.
Ladybird book of Climate Change by Prince Charles which was short. I didn't learn too much new stuff, but it was a good summary. Cool pictures too.
Whit by Iain Banks which started off well, then I felt he was making too much fun of the main character, and I felt sorry for her! It improved again, but I was a little uncomfortable at some parts of the ending.
I'm still here: Black Dignity in a world made for whiteness by Austin Channing Brown which goes really well with Eloquent Rage. I am grateful to all the Black and Indigenous writers who are willing to write about their lives and experiences. I am learning a lot from them.
Time and Time again {Ben Elton} which had some good thought-provoking ideas as well as being an exciting adventure story. However, even though there were some strong female characters, I'm not sure that any of them spoke to each other. I have less patience for books that don't pass the Bechdel test these days!

You reached the halfway point! Good job.
Did you change your old ticker with the new one in the ticker thread too?

I have just checked in and I have a few more books to read to reach my goal!
Since my last update, I have read:
The Hole We're In
I enjoyed this one, even though it was a bit depressing. I like Gabrielle Zevin's books and the fact that her topics are often not common ones. I bought this one second hand after receiving The storied life of A. J. Fikry in the Library Thing Secret Santa two or three years ago.
Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians who Helped Win the Space Race
This was good too. I was impressed that it was the author's first book and she managed to discuss sexism and racism while also writing an entertaining book! It is quite different from the movie, but gives a lot more background. I was so impressed by the determination and perseverance of the women in the book. There was a chilling comment about how everyone who worked in the labs during the war effort contributed to the making of the atomic bomb.
I have just started We Were Feminists Once which was a Library Thing Secret Santa book I received last year. Thank you Secret Santas for helping me to read new and interesting books!

Hi Connie, yes, the one in the ticker thread is right. It just updated when I updated this thread. Would you like me to delete the old ones from this thread?

>13 KWharton: You could do that, but not because I would like it. It might be more clear to visitors of your thread if you did.

I have just finished Changing our mind which was really good. It would be a great tool for people who are at least slightly open to LGBTQIA Christians being fully included in church life. I don't know if someone who wasn't open would even pick up the book. I read it to see if there were any new arguments in it that I hadn't already seen in books like God and the Gay Christian: the Biblical Case in Support of Same-Sex Relationships by Matthew Vines, Letter to my Congregation or Exchanging the Truth of God for a Lie, and to see if it would work for a study group I'm part of. I think it did have some new ideas, or at least some new ways of presenting them. It's written in a clear style and is not very long.

I have just finished We were Feminists Once. I enjoyed it, but it was more of a collection of essays than a book with a beginning, middle, and end.
I have just started Yellow Fever {Jeremy Whittle}. I asked my husband to pick two of my books for me to read, and he chose this one and The Italian Secretary. I'm getting some good variety from my ROOTs!
I will have to read quickly this month to meet my goal (15 ROOTs).

I have finished the last two, and have now started on Oranges are not the Only Fruit which was a SantaThing present. I am enjoying it so far.
