I'm not going to have much time this weekend for reading. I'm in a meeting that ends later today, but I'll be with some of the people who traveled in for the meeting this evening. I've got a board meeting tomorrow and then a wedding after that. Then Sunday we have a bonus rehearsal for Christmas choir music. I suspect most of my reading, except devotional reading, will be audio as I'm driving to and from the meeting today and to and from the wedding tomorrow.

Friday night wind-up for the weekend.

Books read from: I am about to finish Out of the Flames: The Remarkable Story of a Fearless Scholar, a Fatal Heresy, and One of the Rarest Books in the World by Lawrence Goldstone. Third Horseman: Climate Change and the Great Famine of the 14th Century by William Rosen, and I am still slowly cruising through the captions and looking carefully at the illustrations in Mysteries of the Middle Ages by Thomas Cahill (who died this week at the age of 82) even though I listened to the recorded version of the book. I am listening to Us Against You by Fredrik Backman and should finish it this weekend.

Books finished in this weekend's Readathon:

Book Thoughts: I am in the ending stages of a couple of good books. Out of the Flames has proved to be very interesting and enlightening. Us Against You has been very good. I can't get the next in that series because The Winners has just been published in September 2022 and that means that there is a long waiting list for this one. I will have to listen to a different book, but that's not really a problem for me.

Non Book Activities: I have bread to bake and a suitcase to pack for the long Thanksgiving Weekend.

Time reading: 1 hour at lunch today.
Time posting:
Food: chicken strips and left over radicchio, fennel, and citrus salad.

Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 281
Total Time Reading since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 758 hours since I started participating in the Read-A-Thon that started in April 2020

Saturday night update

Books read from: I didn't quite finish Out of the Flames: The Remarkable Story of a Fearless Scholar, a Fatal Heresy, and One of the Rarest Books in the World by Lawrence Goldstone. I am listening to Thousand Beginnings and Endings edited by Ellen Oh and I finished Us Against You by Fredrik Backman.

Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: Us Against You by Fredrick Backman

Book Thoughts: I started listening to Thousand Beginnings and Endings while headed up to Gadsden for knitting class and I have to say that this book is a prime example of paratext in action. I am listening to it, and that is a different format than the print. It is a book of short stories based in Asian fairytales and folktales. At the end of each short story there is a note about where each tale came from, and why the author took that particular view, update, or twist on that tale. I didn't realize this. When I heard the end of the story the recorded version has no (or very little) break between the story and the addendum. As I was listening to the end of the first story, I thought it was a terrible way to end a story. It wasn't until I listened to the third story that I figured out what was going on. As soon as I got into the house I checked the print copy of the book and sure enough, the printed page on which the story ended had a clear demarcation between the story and the added author's notes. This readily apparent information was not as easily translated to the recorded version as in the print version. However, now that I know what is going on, I am sure that it will not bother me.

Non Book Activities: I went to do my sock knitting today and I turned the heel so I should be home free with the pair of socks. I only have to knit the shank of the second sock, rip out and reknit the shank of the first sock, and I will have a new pair of socks to wear. I am excited about that.

Time reading: 3 hours while driving today.
Time posting:
Food: chicken strips and left over radicchio, fennel, and citrus salad. I also had three cups of an excellent Assam tea. It was velvety smooth and just an excellent sipping tea with just a touch of cream in it. For a cold day it was perfect.

Sat night dinner: leftover Chinese

Other activity:
My husband took the poor old cat to the vet for the last time when she took a turn for the worse yesterday. Knew it was coming but I was wrecked over it anyway.

Saturday

Books read from: Dragon of Ash & Stars by H. Leighton Dickson
Books finished: 0
Time reading: ?
Thoughts: Still swinging between being annoyed with Dragon of Ash & Stars and liking it. I'm in less pain after my steroid injection: I've been referring to the remaining pain as being like a memory of pain. What does that mean, I wonder? When I say memory, I guess I do mean that the intensity is less, but, I also mean that there is a distance to what remains. That distance might be the difference between enduring and, I don't know, just being? As if I was doing the equivalent of micromanaging it, and now I'm just doing my thing and it's just doing its thing.
Non-book activities: long soak in the tub, made brownies with fresh mint, washed dishes, Quordle, Two Dots, Free Cell, Brooklyn Nine-Nine (the season 2 Halloween episode was pretty good, almost as good as the one from season 1 with the Captain's birthday)

Sunday night update

Books read from: I finished Out of the Flames: The Remarkable Story of a Fearless Scholar, a Fatal Heresy, and One of the Rarest Books in the World the husband and wife team of Lawrence Goldstone and Nancy Goldstone. I also finished the novella, Into the Riverlands by Nghi Vo. I started reading the second book Name of All Things in a fantasy series. I also read a couple of pages in Third Horseman: Climate Change and the Great Famine of the 14th Century by William Rosen, and I am still slowly cruising through the captions and looking carefully at the illustrations in Mysteries of the Middle Ages by Thomas Cahill (who died this week at the age of 82) even though I listened to the recorded version of the book. I am listening to Thousand Beginnings and Endings edited by Ellen Oh.

Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: Us Against You by Fredrick Backman. Out of the Flames by Lawrence Goldstone. Into the Riverlands by Nghi Vo.

Book Thoughts: I really liked Out of the Flames. It is full of Reformation history about which I knew nothing. It turns out that John Calvin might not be one of the great heroes of the Protestant movement after all. I didn't know that he was French or that his real name was Jean Chauvin. I knew about some of the "reforms' He made while dictator of Geneva, but what I learned about his willingness to censor and suppress all opposition was a surprise. Also a surprise, was how readable this book was. It does get off on a few digressions, but by and large this was a good read for the LT Nonfiction Challenge for November.

Non Book Activities: I did a little cleaning today. Baked two batches of dinner rolls for holiday giving. Baked a small batch of oatmeal raisin cookies to take on my Thanksgiving trip. I also did a bit of cleaning and packed my suitcase for the trip. I also did a little knitting while watching the last episode of Magpie Murders and Miss Scarlet and the Duke. It was a busy but productive day.

Time reading: 2 hours while driving today.
Time posting:
Food: Indian food for lunch and a left over piece of chocolate pie and coffee for supper.

Thoughts: Still swinging between being annoyed with Dragon of Ash & Stars and liking it. About half-way through We Are Not Like Them and I wonder if having a white cop shoot an unarmed black teen is mucking with an interesting story. Wish I had read this in time for book club because I can already tell, at least so far, my take is a bit different from the two others who finished it.
