I might be back. No promises :)

I sort of disappeared from the threads in the last couple of years. My reads for last year are tagged "read in 2022".

Best new to me reads
Five Star
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
Four and a half stars
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
Child of the Phoenix by Barbara Erskine
The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale
A Narrow Door by Joanne Harris
The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson
Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan

I live in West Wales with a couple of thousand books and one cat, Xander. My reading is mainly fantasy, historical fiction, historical fantasy and SF. Other genres and non-fiction might appear occasionally. I'm a big fan of re-reading and chunksters.

I don't know how active I will be but for anyone interested this year's reads will be tagged "read in 2023"

>16 PaulCranswick: Thanks Paul. So I will go to a bit of trouble for you:)

I know you like stats.

So if your definition of a chunkster is over 500 pages

Half of them were over 500 pages (plus a few in the high 400's). The longest was 902. The shortest was 306. All 12 added up to 6656 pages so that is an average of just over 554 pages per book.

Feb 3, 2023, 11:17 am

>20 Carmenere: Lynda, January wasn't too bad for reading:) A nice mix of new to me and re-reads.

>21 sirfurboy: Stephen. The end of last year was meant to be the Malazan Book of the Fallen but that slipped into 2023. This year I'm enjoying my re-read of Robin Hobb but I'll probably break into other reading between the sub-series.

Ariadne wasn't the best re-telling of Greek Myth (nothing like Circe or The Silence of the Women for example) but I did like it. I do like ancient history and mythology so I was familiar with the basic stories of Ariadne and Phaedra; Theseus; the Minotaur and Dionysus. This one didn't add too much to their stories but it does link it all together from the sisters perspective. I'm taking it back to Aberystwyth library tomorrow if you are interested.

Calm, I noted that you read a bunch of the recluse books on your last, 2021, thread. I hope that means you really enjoyed them. I read one and a short story or two many years ago but never tackled the series. I am hoping to start a chronological read of the series this year starting with the cyadorpair. >45 PaulCranswick: Well I decided to do a chronological read of all the Darkover books I have on my shelves. They were quick, not too demanding, reads (for me). Also they distracted me from some electrical work that meant I couldn't watch television or play computer games, so more reading time:)

>47 calm: Looks like August was a good reading month for you, calm. Congratulations on 150+ reads for the year.

I am embarrassed that the only book on your list for August that I have actually read is Beauty.

Have a wonderful weekend!

>48 alcottacre: Thanks Stasia.

Beauty is a good one to have read :) The rest of August was mainly re-reads of older fantasy books. The only recent stuff was borrowed from the library.
