The script for a Wonder Woman movie is right here. Making the best update to the character is what George Perez has done here. ( )

This was a pleasant introduction to a superhero I'd only known from the old Linda Carter series—which did not make me a Wonder Woman fan. Pérez gives us a feminist, anti-war version of the Amazon princess's origins and mission. The Greek goddesses create the Amazons from the souls of women wronged by men and give them the task of showing the world of humans true worship of the gods and the way of love and harmony. This in contrast to Ares's hawkish intentions to turn humans back to worship of the gods out of fear of violence and destruction, a plan that culminates in a Cold War standoff that threatens total nuclear destruction of the world. This may just be a Cold-War update of her origins fighting Nazis, and it's not particularly sophisticated philosophical thinking, but it plays well as a modern parable. ( )

A nicely plotted and drawn origin story for Wonder Woman, with good (but not over-)use of the Greek Gods as enemies (chiefly Ares, God of War) and helpers for the Amazon Princess. The origins of the Amazons, Paradise Island, the Golden Lasso are all explained well. I liked the collection of minor characters who joined Wonder Woman in her fight in Man's World-- they all seemed like real people, especially Lt. Candy and Professor Kapatelis; even the PR shark Myndi Mayer. ( )
