It is rare and splendid event when an author is elevated from the underground into the international literary establishment. In the case of England's best-known and best-loved modern satirist, that event has been long overdue. Terry Pratchett's profoundly irreverent Discworld novels satirize and celebrate every aspect of life, modern and ancient, sacred and profane. Consistent number-one bestsellers in England, they have garnered him a secure position in the pantheon of humor along with Mark Twain, Douglas Adams, Matt Groening, and Jonathan Swift. Even so distinguished an author as A. S. Byatt has sung his praises, calling Pratchett's intricate and delightful fictional Discworld "more complicated and satisfying than Oz." His latest satiric triumph, Carpe Jugulum, involves an exclusive royal snafu that leads to comic mayhem. In a fit of enlightenment democracy and ebullient goodwill, King Verence invites Uberwald's undead, the Magpyrs, into Lancre to celebrate the birth of his daughter. But once ensconced within the castle, these wine-drinking, garlic-eating, sun-loving modern vampires have no intention of leaving. Ever. Only an uneasy alliance between a nervous young priest and the argumentative local witches can save the country from being taken over by people with a cultivated bloodlust and bad taste in silk waistcoats. For them, there's only one way to fight. Go for the throat, or as the vampyres themselves say...Carpe Jugulum.… (more)

Witches group read
If a vampire has to be invited to enter your home, what does it mean when a reigning monarch extends an invitation to vampires to attend a christening? King Verence does that very thing and brings the Lancre witches out in force to protect their country, with the help of the Omnian priest Mightily Oats, Shawn Ogg, Jason and Darren Ogg, and everyone's favorite falconer, Hodgesargh.
One of my favorites, mightily satisfying. A happy re-read. ( )

Nearly twenty five years since I last read and although entirely predictable, this is a rollicking good story. Puns, Nanny Ogg’s innuendo, the joy of familiar characters and environment, which all add up to a great Discworld tale. I had forgotten that this is the first story featuring the Nac Mac Feegles, and that should be recommendation enough.

Not one to start with, as it’s the twenty third in the series and seriously builds on the earlier Witches books, but definitely one to reread. ( )

Whilst not one of Pratchett's philosophical classics (though it does partly act as a philosophical reply to Small Gods, perhaps Pratchett had come to see another perspective on life), this is still a fine read. It's central theme of Don't Treat People Like Things is a simple but somehow so difficult for people to achieve, and the medium by which is it imparted, a simple tale of what happens when some vampires attempt to take over Lancre, are fine tales. Of course, we could easily read it as an allegory for capitalist imperialism - colonialism. regardless, its good fun and introduces some great characters. Some, like Igor(s) are here to stay, whilst others like the vampyres, are laid to rest by the end of the story. Agnes gets some great characterisation too. A Good Read! ( )

Through the shredded black clouds a fire moved like a dying star, falling back to earth - the earth, that is, of the Discworld - but unlike any star had ever done before, it sometimes managed to steer its fall, sometimes rising, sometimes twisting, but inevitably heading down.

Book description
Mightily Oats has not picked a good time to be priest. He thought he’d come to Lancre for a simple ceremony. Now he’s caught up in a war between vampires and witches.

There’s Young Agnes, who is really in two minds about everything. Magrat, who is trying to combine witchcraft and nappies, Nanny Ogg ... and Granny Weatherwax, who is big trouble.

And the vampires are intelligent. They’ve got style and fancy waistcoats. They’re out of the casket and want a bite of the future. Mightily Oats knows he has a prayer, but he wishes he had an axe.
