The literary equivalent of drinking your favorite milkshake in a cozy, late-night diner. ( ) Tina Fey's introduction states “for me this book has been a simple task of retracing my steps to figure out what factors contributed to this person” an ordinary child, becoming famous, but secretly preferring performing out of the spotlight (my paraphrase of her photos). Fey was into entertainment from an early age and comfortable with herself to such a degree that she could flow with the ups and downs of a performing life. Interesting insights into summer theater, improvisation performance and comedy writing. Her entry into SNL performance was as a fill in after years of writing for the show. She had left SNL after 9 years and was in her third year of producing and acting in 30Roc when Sarah Palin hit the political scene and she was bombarded by people who thought they looked a-like and encouraged her to create the character on SNL. The book ends about 6 years into 30Roc's run. I liked the Palin sketches and some of her SNL work; never watched 30Roc and saw few of her movies. I enjoyed the memoir as a look at a life made with determination and for owning her faults and successes and for being able to do it with humor.
Only the American comic Tina Fey could get away with such a revelation-free 'memoir'. But Fey’s memoir is wholly cleansed of any real darkness. It preempts any probing into real frailties and flaws. Of course, this is the point; it is designed to disarm. Neurosis makes Bossypants funny (and it is very funny), but it is fueled by reflexive self-deprecation instead of real reflection. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live; from her passionately halfhearted pursuit of physical beauty to her life as a mother eating things off the floor; from her one-sided college romance to her nearly fatal honeymoon, comedian Tina Fey reveals all, and proves that you're no one until someone calls you bossy.
