What drew me to this particular detective story was that I'd heard it was pretty good on murky foggy post-war London. On that score I wasn't disappointed. The band (pun unintended) of ruffians was, to say the least, unusual, and worlds away from Ms Allingham's pre-war middle-class milieux. ( ) A very atmospheric thriller with the fog of post-war London hampering the search for the killer and the killer's own search for his quary. Several chapters are very cinematic and I could see them as a screenplay while reading. The villans are thoroughly non-pc in the modern world but the theological/philosophical undertones of the story are what elevate it above the normal run of British whodunnits. Well worth a read on a foggy day. no reviews | add a review
