Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found and her beloved uncle is convinced she was murdered, and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced investigative journalist Mickael Blomkvist and the tattooed and troubled yet resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate--with troubling results. A strong film - both in the well-made sense and in the black coffee sense. There are some scenes that are horribly unpleasant to watch. But they're a relatively small portion of the movie, and they make important contributions to the story and characters. Overall, it's a much more entertaining movie than I expected based on its Swedishness, the bad poster and the premise (which in fact is not anywhere near as lame as it sounds when glibly summarized).
