Very well written, and very well constructed, and interesting subject matter. However thinking back on it once I had finished I see it as a wet dream of an adolescent. Unlimited lovemaking with a beautiful girl and the narrator always being morally right so ultimately disappointing. While I was reading it I wondered why it felt like reading a book for children (not that I minded that as I read a lot of children's books)and I think that is why. Us feminists should probably steer clear as we can get a bit annoyed about this sort of thing, but it was his first book and he does write very well. ( )

Read for Book club. Good read. Main characters are Danny, whose gran has just died and he now looks.after her pig. His girl friend Surinder also lives on his estate and they meet for sex at.gran’s flat (granddad has gone in a home). Casual racism, family arguments, the bullies Spud and partner.

This was a good quick read. I felt that there were a couple of loose ends left but it did not take away from the story. I would recommend, especially to a young adult. ( )

Poignant teen/adult novel of youthful cross-cultural encounter in the poor suburbs of a northern English town. ( )
