Corey Leggi la mia.... InstaRecensione! Leviathan Wakes was one of my great reads this year (review: http://carols.booklikes.com/post/326388/post ). It broke into my reading blahs and set off a trend of great reads. After finishing, I promptly placed a library request for Caliban’s War, out of general interest and just the tiniest bit of series OCD. When it arrived, I was in the middle of monthly reads for my book club, then all hell broke open over at Goodreads, resulting in a loss of reading mojo, quickly followed by reviewing mojo. Bridge of Birds brought me back to reading, but my reviewing despondency has lingered. Caliban’s War fails to live up to the fun, plotting or consistency of Leviathan Wakes, though the writers tried their best by slapping a new cover on a heavily recycled version of the Leviathan. Narrative again begins with a point of view from a female character who won’t be heard from again, but will serve as the object/grail for obsessive male questors as they careen through space. Again, we have Jim Holden surrendering to his Tourette syndrome tendencies as he tilts at windmills and volunteers for suicide missions. Unsurprisingly, we also have the protomolecule, spaceships, and a Mars versus Earth versus Belters conflict. Because I continue my review with off-topic digressions about libraries and a mild speculation about author sexism, both of which violate GR's terms of service for on-topic, non-author-bashing reviews, the rest of this review will be continued at: http://carols.booklikes.com/post/653257/in-which-i-review-a-book-with-a-variety-... or http://clsiewert.wordpress.com/2013/10/24/1890/ Excellent! As the story expands in complexity, we now have 4 main POVs instead of the 2 in the first book, which helps make a complicated narrative more personal, more focused rather than sprawling. We also have two strong female characters, Bobbie (soldier) and Avasarala (politician/powerbroker) in addition to Naomi. Most importantly, we have a rapidly developing alien force in the protomolecule soldiers and the protomolecule/Eros-Julie infected planet of Venus. no reviews | add a review

We are not alone. On Ganymede, breadbasket of the outer planets, a Martian marine watches as her platoon is slaughtered by a monstrous supersoldier. On Earth, a high-level politician struggles to prevent interplanetary war from reigniting. And on Venus, an alien protomolecule has overrun the planet, wreaking massive, mysterious changes and threatening to spread out into the solar system. In the vast wilderness of space, James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante have been keeping the peace for the Outer Planets Alliance. When they agree to help a scientist search war-torn Ganymede for a missing child, the future of humanity rests on whether a single ship can prevent an alien invasion that may have already begun . . .
