Loading... Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons (original 2012; edition 2012)by Eric Litwin (Author)My mom is a Para Educator and she loves Pete the car books! I think it's so funny. She'll be home, doing chores and she'll sing "I love my white shoes, I love my white shoes." I wanted to give the books a try because I never read one and decided on this one. I thought it was endearing, I love the attitude of "this is my favorite thing but now it doesn't exist and that's okay. I'm not worried about it" I don't think I've read a book that tackles that. Plus it made me wonder, do cats have belly buttons? Pete the Cat starts the story with "4 groovy buttons". He loves his buttons so much - he even wrote a song about them. So what does Pete do when one button pops off? Does he cry- goodness no! Pete the Cat continues to sing his groovy song all the way down to just his belly button left. The repeated text and catchy tune are sure to be a hit with everyone. This book is about Pete the cat and his blue jacket with four buttons. With each button, he sings a song about his "groovy buttons". I would recommend this book to preschool -1st grade students. This age group/demographic would best fit this book because it is a simple book and it does not have that much text per page. My grandson wanted this read over and over one day when he was almost three. He would say, “Again.” I kept reading it. I admit his parents got tired of it. The very next day he sat in his little stuffed chair and read the entire book aloud to himself, which he was unaware was videotaped —adorable. Even, “Well, I still have my bellybutton!” I wish I could share but I would be in trouble with his parents! What a simple story but perfectly wonderful for a young child, even with the backwards counting. This is a favorite among the many preschool and kindergarten teachers I know. The book shows Pete the Cat wearing his yellow jacket with his four buttons. One button pops off and Pete is still happy about the buttons he has left. They slowly countdown to until he doesn’t have any buttons left. This teaches children to count down and always see the bright side. Litwin, E.(2012). Pete The Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons. New York: HaperCollins. The sing song rhythm of this book makes it a great one for preschool age children. The story uses the buttons on Pete’s shirt to count with and could also be used to talk about colors as each button has its own color. Pete’s story and how he loses his buttons along the way allow to children to realize things sometimes don’t go as they should. This allows the concept to be taught of moving on and not getting too upset when things don’t go your way. In the end Pete loses all his buttons but then realizes there is one button he still has, his belly button which is a great light hearted way to end the story. I absolutely love all of the "Pete the Cat" books, but "Four Groovy Buttons" is one of my top favorites! My students at the daycare absolutely love this book. I love this book for many, many, reasons. This book incorporates two other areas of content into reading itself; music and mathematics. This is really impressive. Students are encouraged to sing along with Pete the Cat as he sings about his groovy buttons as he looses them, one by one. The book also has students use skills of subtraction, by having them subtract buttons as Pete the Cat looses them, and having them determine how many Pete has left. Focusing on a literature perspective, this book is also amazing as it uses a lot of repetition, which allows children the ability to read along with this book during read aloud. It is a great book to encourage choral reading, and get students used to doing it. Absolutely great children's book! I absolutely love this book! It is so cheerful, light, and simple. I have read it in many of my classrooms and they all love it. I have used this book to teach math on a pre-k level, it was a great lesson. They can subtract and count the buttons that Pete loses on his shirt. Children love the sing-song words and repetition. I love how relaxed all the Pete the Cat series is, it gives children a sense that everything will be ok. Every book in the Pete The cat series is simply amazing! The author puts you in a great mood and you remember the books long after you have read them. |
