Throne of Glass, part of the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas was an okay debut. It starts with Celaena Sardothien. She works in a salt mine in Endovier. She used to be an assassin but she got caught and this is her punishment. However, someone offers her a chance to escape. Celaena accepts but there is one condition. She must fight in a tournament to the death to decide who's the winner. The pacing makes the book last 400 pages, but scenes with more action were better than filler ones. Removing the second type could help the reading experience. Celaena and her partner developed, but not by much because they only started a tenuous relationship which intruded on the central storyline. Additionally, side characters received no depth or development, but adding more would help. Throne of Glass would be a high fantasy since Maas set it on another world. Yet, there are more medieval duels and battles than magic. The worldbuilding left me with some questions. What kind of magic system is there, if there is any? The king must use Celaena, but for what? Throne of Glass intrigued me enough. The writing style is accessible for a YA audience, as it avoids purple prose but lacks detailed descriptions. The conclusion is okay.
