I'm a monster, too.” Part steampunk, part fantasy, this was a fun, easy, fascinating read. I enjoyed the subtle switches in the world for steampunk but also the Fae. Learning the ins and outs of those baddies was fascinating as well. Aileana is struggling - she's supposed to be a genteel girl looking for a husband. She's 18 with a fabulous dowry. But not too long ago, her mother was murdered and she was found covered in blood and holding her mother in her arms. But that day didn't just change Aileana's world because she lost her mom (and had to shoulder the scandal of everyone thinking she might be a murder) but she also started seeing the Fae - creatures that inhabit her world, killing humans at will. Luckily, the Fae are few in numbers and Aileana quickly aims to learn their weaknesses and strengths. The story picks up from there and is easy to fall right in to. Kiaran was a nice distraction and I enjoyed his piece in the story. And even Gavin and Catherine kept the story well paced and the information interesting. I loved Derrick and think he might be my favorite character. Bring that little guy some more honey! I will definitely be reading the rest of this series. I thought this was a fun read. I liked the world and how the fae characters were the focused. I also really loved how this story took place in scotland and thought it also had a regency air to it. I also thought the this book also a fun romance but it was def not my favorite read. I struggled a little bit with the the pacing and the plot of this story it was quick listen!! Hope to tackle the rest of this season soon! I thought this was a fun read. I liked the world and how the fae characters were the focused. HTML: Edinburgh, 1844. Beautiful Aileana Kameron only looks the part of an aristocratic young lady. In fact, she's spent the year since her mother died developing her ability to sense the presence of Sithichean, a faery race bent on slaughtering humans. She has a secret mission: to destroy the faery who murdered her mother. But when she learns she's a Falconer, the last in a line of female warriors and the sole hope of preventing a powerful faery population from massacring all of humanity, her quest for revenge gets a whole lot more complicated. The first volume of a trilogy from an exciting new voice in young adult fantasy, this electrifying thriller blends romance and action with steampunk technology and Scottish lore in a deliciously addictive read. .No library descriptions found. |

Kam is developed nicely with a believable history; I especially liked the sentimental origin of her machine making skills & constellation interest. She had attractive soft & hard qualities in her double life-- she’s a proper Scottish debutante by day, and a vicious fairy-killer avenging her mother’s death by night.
I loved the setting. Had to look up the Gaelic pronunciations so I could read easier. Scotland is all the rage now, with Outlander coming onto the screen tomorrow & the vote in the Fall.
SLJ is right on recommending grade 7 & up. ( )
