Loading... Finale (edition 2012)by Becca FitzpatrickThis was by far my favorite book in the series. I love that Nora finally does something. ( ) First I must say that I am sad to see this series end, but I have enjoyed it every step of the way. I have been enamored with Patch since we were first introduced to this charismatic and mysterious character in Hush, Hush. I have also loved Becca Fitzpatrick's ability to surprise me. Most books I read I can predict the ending, but I've never been able to predict hers which I admire greatly. In Fitzpatrick's last installment of her series, she doesn't disappoint. I was glued to my seat the whole time, and I read the book in only a day. I felt that Nora's character developed a lot throughout the book and by the end I felt that she was a much stronger person than she was in the first novel. Patch continued to steal my heart with his witty/sexual comments, his strength, and most of all his absolute love and dedication to Nora. Scott was in this novel as well, but I would have liked to see him more in the middle of the novel. However, he is still there and is especially important at the end, so don't worry fans of Scott! We also found out a secret about Vee that I never saw coming, so again bravo to you Becca Fitzpatrick you shocked me once again. The plot line of the story was well-paced and kept me interested the whole time. The ending of story was epic (once again I couldn't predict what was going to happen which made it so much better) and I even started tearing up since I have become so attached to these characters. However, it had a very satisfying ending and left me as a reader feeling happy for the characters. If you have any doubts about reading the last book of this series I must insist that you read it! It was absolutely fantastic Time was up. Either we got the feathers–Or the Nephilim race would lose more than the war. They'd be in bondage to fallen angels for eternity. Following the events from [b:Silence|10637766|Silence (Hush, Hush, #3)|Becca Fitzpatrick|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1362408152l/10637766._SY75_.jpg|14158688], Nora Grey has to adjust to her new life as a Nephil and the heir to the Black Hand. After swearing an oath to Hank Green, Nora is now the leader of the Nephilim army and will have to figure out how to free all Nephilim from being used as a vassal during Cheshvan. Trust. Betrayal. Fear. I felt as though this book had too many plot twists. Usually, the author writes details throughout the entirety of the book that leads up to one BIG plot twist, but with this book, there was a plot twist every few chapters. I would be lying if I said I wasn't shocked at these plot twists, but I felt as though they were too often. I suppose the last plot twist was the most anticipated one. A lot of readers are here for Patch, so when we watch the scenes unfold and find out he was sent to hell forever, I'm sure that was the last thing we wanted and/or expected. Now, I've never experienced love before so I have no idea how it feels, but Nora was so dramatic when it came to Patch that I had to stop and sit for a minute every time she said she couldn't live without him. Queen, you met less than a year ago... But I know if I was put in this position with Sirius Black, I would feel the same way. I found the training sessions with Dante to be quite boring and useless to the story, but as I think about it, it was to convince the readers that he could be trusted. When I got to the cemetery scene, I just knew it was going to be Dante. Someone we all trusted. When we got to the war scene, I was honestly very stressed. We had just found out Vee was also Nephil. Which, in my opinion, was very unnecessary. But I still didn't want anything to happen to her. But then Scott made a beautiful sacrifice for Nora. WE LOVE YOU SCOTT!! And then we find out Patch is alive!!! YIPPEE!! Detective Basil told Nora to cut her arm and I was like?? But then Nora and Patch made an oath to each other and mix their blood and guess what... PATCH CAN FEEL! Now they can kiss and hug and do all the other things teens do and it won't be one-sided. In the Epilogue, we see Vee getting married and being happy. But what killed me was: "Your mom told me Marcie died a couple months ago." "She lived longer than anyone expected." HELP?!?!?! THAT MADE ME LAUGH... Patch and Nora got a happy ending The finale, and it's titled... Finale. We're off to a great start! We've got a nephilim army being described to us, for the first time in this book series might I add. And there's some black cloaked ones that are forming a mysterious council, I'm sure that can't be anything weird. Nora has signed a blood oath to lead this army and the day that she stops leading this army, she will die. Very weird. I feel like I'm making up brand new sentences every time I talk about this series. None of these senses need to exist, and none of them makes sense. The entirety of these four books have happened over the course of a year. With the first two books taking up two months time, book three taking up a greater length of time, and this book finally ending on a year. One year has passed and all of these books have occurred within that year. There have been multiple wars, murders, lost, and death within a year. But we're just fine and continuing on into this series. It hasn't even been that long. The possession and body stealing part of the first book makes a return for no reason other than it's a Halloween release book and we need something ookie spooky so I guess this will do. And this one we get the rules bent a little bit more and now basically anyone can possess anyone, for some reason. And of course this is going to lead to some bad things because possession can never just be casual or consensual. It's not a new thing, it was one of the very first established things in the book series but it really doesn't feel like it belongs here anymore. Especially since it's basically bullying someone into giving their body over for possession and then ignoring their consent and playing with their body. Pretty gross stuff. But it lets them feel pleasure and experience fun so why not be terrifying and bully nephilim and fallen angels for kicks. And even the characters in the book don't know how it works despite being immortal Angel beings who have been around forever. So that's a thing. Two physical bodies sloughing together, whee! At some point she drinks a Gatorade tainted with devil craft. Nora drinks the Kool-Aid, and the Kool-Aid is devil craft. It's actually Gatorade as far as I remember, but it's still basically the drink the Kool-Aid joke. I'm so unamused with Satan infused Kool-Aid. Devil craft is a... New new thing introduced in this book. Our main villain carries around 20 bottles with him at any time because it can be weaponized. Cool? Why? That's a very weirdly specific number to carry around for one thing. Oh, and the devil craft is very addictive so it's a drug, and a Kool-Aid joke. Lemon Sunflower Dandelion LSD joke when? It also turns their blood neon blue and florescent. Because black and red would be too on the nose. It's book four and we get our first angel... His name is Pepper. He's described as ugly and sad. Man. What a build up. Such good character reveal. There's like a million subplots in this book that go nowhere, and are instantly resolved or thrown around so that the book can meet some kind of page quota. I hate it. I hate the entire experience of this book. Nora randomly pulls out a magic drug addiction cure from nowhere. And fixes everything that's been wrong in this book. It's been there the whole time, but she was just waiting until it was the best time to reveal this drug addiction cure. *Siiiighs* I've left out a character, the best character in this whole series was Marcie, a character who was born with a serious medical/health problem and was shamed for her weight and treated terribly even when she redeemed herself. In this book she dies and the funeral procession only has five people attend besides her mother, they all shrug and make non-committal noises and everybody moves on. She is forgotten, not remembered by anyone deliberately, and not cared about. Even though in this book she spends it trying to form a bond with her mother and her sibling. It is a terrible mistreatment, because it was already said that she would be born sickly and frail and even though she was struggling with this the whole time she was kind of an eating disorder joke. I really hated that, I hated that she got this great character development only to be killed off. Nora did not deserve such a great sister. Screw character development, amirite? Ugh. Marcie had severe flaws but was trying to improve and grow which is more than anyone else in this book. Also wrist spotting blood pact happened. Patch and Nora, with Patch using a ring to cut himself and Nora all slitting her wrist up and down repeatedly. Blood pact made! I'm disgusted but not surprised. "Do you think there's an afterlife?" I rarely get this mad in a review. I'm able to handle a lot of really stupid things. Hush, Hush is a breakthrough of stupid. I don't like anything about this book and nothing in this series is original or logical. It's been an inconsistent heap. 0 stars. I'm so glad it's finally over. Sweet sweet release! Hush Hush blew me away --- brilliant! Crescendo was a disappointment --- crud. Silence brought hope --- pretty good Finale... Finale is all about the war of Nephelim against fallen angels the war is to break the fealty that the Nephelim are forced to swear for one month of the year, entitling fallen angels to possess their hosts body and pretty much rape pillage and plunder for a whole month (oh goody.) After Hank is dealt with Nora becomes the leader by oath and if she refuses....she dies, simple. So with the help of Dante and Scott she learns the ropes and eventually agrees that the war is justifiable. However there is a Judas in the ranks and Nora finds out a little to late and is then forced into a life and death combat to gain her rightful place as the leader of Nephelim. Overall Finale was good to read, it was quick paced and to the point, there is more character development in this book and a couple of them actually grew on me, whilst others really pissed me off. There were a few twists and surprises in this book, unfortunately I did guess early on to them all, except the one about Basso, though I did feel he had something to do with the story and I was wondering what kept him popping up, his little -very minor- role in the story was a really nice job to give him. I do however wonder what happened to his dog when he left, I thought Nora would have claimed it but it got dropped. Likewise with Nora's love rival Dabria she sort of up and vanished too, with no mention of the possibility her feather had been burned. Scott had been oe of my favorites from the start, he was the most real character in the story, in particular in the guy way of doing thing and what he says, and out of all the characters that were killed including Patch, his was the only one that I felt anything other than 'oh well' about. Again I would like to include my exceptional hatred for Nora's mother, her over protectiveness of her daughter (whom for the majority she refuses to listen to and give off the impression she hates) is just ridiculous, at sixteen/seventeen she should get off her high horse and accept her daughter will eventually be sexually active. I have learnt that Fitzpatrick has no set writing, authors of a series you learn that they are either good, bad or okay at what they do, with each of these four book I have had a different opinion for each. I have borrowed each book from the library, and I'm still wondering whether or not to buy them because they are the sort of books you don't know if you want to pick up again or not. Lastly; A fairly boring closure to a pretty good series, but boring is just what the characters need! Time was up. Either we got the feathers–Or the Nephilim race would lose more than the war. They'd be in bondage to fallen angels for eternity. There were a few plot elements that fell through the cracks for me which is why I'm only giving this book 3 stars. I wish Fitzpatrick would have addressed Hank's death - like how does Blythe react to Hank's disappearance? Does/will she ever find out Hank is gone? I also wish there was closure with the Nephilim after the battle - do they all go separate ways after the fallen angels are killed? So as you all know (or SHOULD since this is a review of the fourth and final book) is that it’s about Nora Grey. She’s part Nephilim, which means she is the daughter of a Nephilim and a human, which means she’s the grandkid of a human and a fallen angel. Fallen Angels take control over Nephilim bodies during the month known as Cheshvan. So the two hate each other forever and ever. If a fallen angel kills a female descendent of their Nephilim host, the immortal host will die and the fallen angel will become human. Nora is smitten with Patch (Jev) who is a fallen angel, saves her life in book one, and becomes her guardian angel. Gets involved with Nora’s mortal nemesis Marcie in book2 while the mysterious Black Hand threatens Nora’s life, and the issue of Nora’s father’s murderer. Nora also encounters childhood friend ‘scotty the hotty’ (Scott) who turns out to be nephilim. Book 2 ends, Rixon is the murderer and also tries to kill Nora, Patch and Nora are back together, Vee the bff is witty as usual, and dunDunDUN Marcie’s dad is Nora’s biological father. Book 3 has Nora losing her memories and restarting her relationship with Jev (frickin’ adorable) and she spends the book recovering from being kidnapped by Hank! So end of book three was pretty intense and leaves the reader wondering what Nora will do now that she’s head of Hank’s Nephilim army! An Army that’s set on destroying their captors, destroying the fallen angels- destroying Patch. My Thoughts: Let me just say that Scott was perfect. I loved him throughout this series, though I was TOTALLY rooting for Patch as far as being with Nora goes. Books 2 and 3 were nowhere near as good as 1 and 4 (as far as I’m concerned) and this last book made getting through 2&3 worth it for me. Throughout the series Nora hasn’t been very smart. Book smart, maybe, but not street/boy smart. This book was no exception. She knew that devilscraft was bad for her, but the way it heightened her abilities and made her almost as strong as a normal Nephilim got her addicted to the stuff. DUMB. She’s also still really paranoid about losing Patch to another girl. Seriously?!?!?! After all you two have been through, you can’t trust him by now??!!?!!!???!? However, this book made reading the whole series worth it! Oh my god! There are always these unexpected plot twists and betrayals from the people I least expect (such as Rixon in book 2). The second Vee said she had a secret it was pretty obvious what it was, but at the same time I didn’t want it to be true. With everything going on it should’ve been apparent much sooner, and Nora’s heightened abilities in book 4 would’ve picked up on it. Her secret just seemed forced and didn’t seem to fit in with the book. Another thing I didn’t like is that Vee is normally a witty, loud-mouthed, strong-willed girl. And after Rixon, she swore off boys, but the second Vee sees this one guy she falls head over heels for him! I mean, they DO make an adorable couple and I totally shipped them, but still…… I honestly thought Marcie wasn't going to be the important in this book.... She’s annoying, self-centered, and honestly really bitchy. She wants to know who her father’s murderer is (that would be Nora) and decides to move- in with Nora and Nora’s mom! Geez, Mrs. Grey is too much of a push-over. So Marcie lives with Nora, gets some sister bonding and investigating done, and Marcie screws up so important plans…. Let’s just say that boy was I wrong about her being unimportant. Nora shapes up and gained my respect towards the end, but the end was still heart-breaking ;( And Detective Basso's real identity? Geeez I didn't even THINK to consider something was up with him. Vee was sassy and hilariously witty throughout as usual :D Patch was frickin' sexy as HELL, thank god for that. Scott is still my favorite All in all, the Nephilim vs Fallen Angel tension was great. Having Nora lead the Black Hand's Army against the Fallen Angels, yet needing to quell Nephilim rebellion to appease the Archangels.... Intense. Loved Vee I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. Unfortunately, there is still always a risk of slight spoilers despite my best efforts. If you feel something in my review is a spoiler please let me know. Thank you. So the ending was not as good as I was expecting. I don't know what I was expecting exactly, but I just feel it should have been more than it was. Not to say it was bad, cause it wasn't. For the most part, I enjoyed the book and it reads so nice and easy, I just feel a bit let down by the ending. Ok so one of my bigger issues is that I saw the bad guy coming from the beginning of this book. The bad guy follows a similar pattern from every book in this series. Another issue is something that a friend mentioned in a buddy read from the first book. The characters feel really juvenile. Its what you would expect from people of this age, but not what you come to expect from a YA book. Finally, Marcie, I don't think this was done right. I really wanted to not hate her. I feel the book did wrong by her. She deserves some redemption. Now for some things I liked about the book. Number one is the romance, despite it being juvenile and not fully healthy, its a great romance and typical of what I expect in a YA book. I love the Angel vs. Nephilim lore. It's a nice change from vampires and demons. Like I mentioned before, I loved that it was an easy read. Easy to take in and easy on the brain. I mean I love me a good book that gets you thinking, but it's nice to sit back with an easy read every once in a while too. And the covers, OMG, I love the covers on these books, it's one of the things that drew me in in the first place. All in all I'd give the whole series a 4-star rating. It's worth reading for sure, and I'd recommend it to those in the right age range or those like me who just enjoy YA romance. However, I doubt I'd take the time to reread this series. It was nice while it lasted but time to move on to other things. And I will probably look into more books by this author. My book blog: http://yumyabooks.blogspot.com My Summary: This is the fourth and final book in the bestselling Hush, Hush series. In the previous book, Silence, Nora swore an oath that if Hank Miller (aka The Black Hand and her dad) died, she'd take his place as leader of the Nephilim race. And, naturally, he died so she became the leader. So in Finale Nora is to lead the Nephilim army to war against the fallen angels, which also means against Patch (aka fallen angel and love of her life). Naturally, she doesn't want to do this, so she and Patch devise a plan: lead everyone to believe they are no longer together and while Nora tries to convince the Nephilim not to fight the fallen angels, Patch would be finding out as much as he can about the fallen angels' plans, stopping the war before it even begins. But even the best of plans turn astray and when Nora finds herself with a supposed friend turned into unexpected enemy, and an troubling addiction to deal with, it leaves her unprepared for her most frightening journey yet... It's done. Patch and Nora's story is finished and I'm more than bit sad about that. Although, I must say it ends well and I don't find myself wishing there was another book so I guess that means it's completed. At the beginning of the book I liked Dante and when I found out he was the guy being all evil I was rally upset but he turned out to be a bit of a dick so I don't mind so much anymore and I'm glad Nora kicked his ass. Overall I enjoyed this book, yet it's not my favourite in the series. Oh, and Nora totally changes. She goes from sweet protective Nora to manipulative ass-kicking Nora. I actually think I liked the earlier Nora more, it seemed more HER - just saying. This was an okay conclusion. It didn't flow as well as the previous books and was harder for me to get into. Nora continued to be disappointing and irritating. Everything was a mess until the end and all the action happened in a few short pages that felt rushed. The twist with Vee was obvious and felt forced. I did like Scott and would have liked to read more of him. It wasn't all terrible, Nora becoming Nephil was interesting and Patch is always great. The end mostly wrapped things up so I wasn't left with a lot of questions. I just wanted a little better final book after the first 3 were so good. So, after my last status update, I went upstairs to my room sat on bed and told myself, "Monica, you must sit here and read this book for at least an hour, no getting up to get water, no bathroom breaks, no nothing." In that hour, this book finally managed to suck me in, and it's ending gave me closure. overall, a decent ending to an AMAZING series. update on Jan 22** Okay, in that last hour, it was like BAM! one shocking revelation after another. It was like: "What?Whoa, whoa, whoa! Wait a minute? Did that just happen? NOOOO, I liked him!" "ShutUp! Really? Daaang, I should've seen that coming!" "Okay, I saw that coming from a million miles away." "What? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I really LIKED him!" "NO. *sobbing* No. Why? Why did that just have to happen?" "AWW. That's so sweet, and like, romantic and stuff." that was me, TALKING TO MYSELF, for a whole hour. So first of all I loved this series even though a few of the characters had a lot of times I didn't like them. I was really upset when Scott died, that seriously made me so sad. He was a great friend to Nora even though he tried to harm her before. Nora did some stupid S*$% in this book. The whole drinking Devilcraft thing was ridiculous. She was really dumb for doing that. The lying to Patch about it and making him think she drank it when she didn't. Stupid Stupid Stupid. Nora seemed to grow a lot through this series which was great to see. Patch/Jev was basically the same maybe a little softer as we got into the series. At the beginning he reminded me of Edward from Twilight. Tough, lots of secrets. What is with Vee being a Nephilim? That made it a little less believable, other than the fact that it is a fantasy story. Seems to good to be true. Vee really drove me CRAZY at the beginning of this series but about halfway thru book 3 I started to like her a little more. That doesn't mean I'll be having sleepovers and doing manicures with her anytime soon. Also WTF is up with all the people Nora tries to trust always end up stabbing her in the back; Rixon, now Dante...she has horrible taste in friends apparently. Overall I really loved this series and I loved the ending we got. It was a great HEA! This was by far the best of the series. Honestly, if you can get through the first one, and stick with them, you will like the "Finale". All the twisty turns and the I thought that character was dead/good/on my side... really fun read. the Patch Nora relationship didn't annoy me like the first book either. I don't want to go into the plot too much bcs if you haven't read it and want to- spoilers stink when you didn't want them. |
