After reading Salt to the Sea, I purchased all of Ruta Sepetys' books and am working my way through them all. This book is set in New Orleans during 1950. Having grown up in the heart of New Orleans, with a terrible mother, Josie Moraine has been on her own since she was twelve. She has friends who have looked after her and helped her to dream of getting out of New Orleans and into an elite college. Josie Moraine, the daughter of a brothel prostitute, is caught between the dream of an elite college and a clandestine underworld in New Orleans. It is a rich story of secrets, lies, and the haunting reminder that decisions can shape our destiny. This is a character driven book and I especially liked Josie's character. Her mother was a prostitute but she was not going in that direction. The plot was one that led me to read the book to the sad ending. I look forward to reading more from this author as I really liked this book. If you like heartfelt books then you will love this book. no reviews | add a review

And this book had it! Interesting characters set along the back drop of New Orleans in the 1950's. But I didn't find it as fun as I'd hoped. It got a little too wrapped into her finding her father and bogged down a little. ( )
