This book challenges the reader to emulate Hudson Taylor's life without falling prey to worshiping the man himself. His problems, such as illness, the loss of a child and later his wife and newborn son to cholera, an injury that leaves him paralyzed for almost a year, all show sides of him, including his struggles with doubts and fears. However, Hudson Taylor pushes on in the Lord's strength and grace, serving God and making a difference on the mission field.

Christian - 21/2 stars. He felt this book was more for an adult than a child.

Julia-3 stars

I really liked this book especially when we read Hudson Taylor's personal writings/letters throughout the book. His thoughts on paper are steeped in scripture and love for Christ.

I also liked how this story was not just about Hudson Taylor but his godly wife. At times, the book was very detailed in describing things, but I didn't mind that. I loved this biography. ( )

The testimony of Hudson Taylor was influential in the lives of later missionaries like Amy Carmichael (1867–1951), Eric Liddell (1902–1945), and Jim Elliot (1927–1956). Elizabeth Elliot once said:

"When I was a college student my father lent me the two-volume life of Hudson Taylor." [not this book] "Another college student, Jim Elliot, read it too and this was one of the great things he and I had in common—a huge hunger for that sort of godliness, for a true missionary heart."
