Entertainingly exemplifying the maxim that "All diplomacy is a continuation of war by other means," The Human Division is the type of intelligently crafted and inventive military-political science fiction that reminds us that though we might be able to pinpoint a genre's takeoff point, nobody can predict how far it it will fly. The story is told in a series of short-story-like episodes which connect to form the novel. It gives the book a somewhat disjointed feel, but the story itself is engaging and thought-provoking. The author has structured most of the episodes around pairs of key characters, with Harry Wilson and Hart Schmidt in starring roles. Other pairs are Ambassador Ode Abumwe and Captain Sophia Coloma as supporting characters in several of the episodes and Colonels Abel Rigney and Liz Egan as important strategists and string-pullers.
The overall plot of the Old Man’s War series inches forward in this book; a nearly undetected outside force seems determined to set the Colonial Union and Earth at odds, as well as the Colonial Union and the Conclave. I have my suspicions and hope to find out if i’m right in the final book of the series. ( )
