A masterful tale of ambition, jealousy, desire, and superpowers Victor and Eli started out as college roommates--brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong. Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find--aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge--but who will be left alive at the end? In Vicious, V. E. Schwab brings to life a gritty comic-book-style world in vivid prose: a world where gaining superpowers doesn't automatically lead to heroism, and a time when allegiances are called into question. "A dynamic and original twist on what it means to be a hero and a villain. A killer from page one...highly recommended " --Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of Marvel Universe vs. The Avengers and Patient Zero One of Publishers Weekly's Best Fantasy Books of 2013… (more)

I struggled a lot through this one. I never connected with the characters at all or grew invested in their desires and needs. As a result the action always felt at a distance. The nature of EOs and their creation wasn't particularly interesting or novel, nor did it cross the threshold of esoteric action which warranted suspension of disbelief.

The writing itself is perfectly cromulent. I have no specific issues with characterization, lack of roundness, issues of voice, description, or any such failings. All the ingredients where there from an author that clearly knows the craft well. It just didn't land for me.

Based on the overall reviews, and those of people I know and trust, I'm the odd-ball here. You'll probably like it. ( )

I cant say i hated this books and i cant say that i loved this book.

The book is good. The story is good. The characters are awesome but the final section didn't had the action that i needed. ( )

This was entertaining - But I couldn't help picturing Vincent as Megamind and Eli as Titan - so it held a sort of comical view for me

"There are no good men in this game"

This author never disappoints. I didn't even read the synopsis. I just saw her name and jumped in to the story. And what an amazing story!

Victory and Eli - best friends although a bit grudgingly. They are competitive and it's driven a wedge between them. When figuring their thesis for their big project, Eli gets the bright idea to study Extra Ordinary people - a term he's coined for people that seem to have extra "powers" - like superheros or villains. Like comic book characters.

But don't be confused - this is not a silly story about fights and villains. This is a dark story about people that do things for the wrong reasons or the right reasons - but doesn't everyone always see themselves as the Hero?

Victor and Eli are both very complex characters and kept me flipping the pages - wondering who I should root for and make me wonder if I was really rooting for either. I loved the complexities and not seeing the ending before it arrived. Well done. I can't wait to keep reading the series. ( )

Quotations
Someone could call themselves a hero and still walk around killing dozens. Someone else could be labeled a villain for trying to stop them. Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human. (p. 271)
