Luke Scull's The Grim Company is an exciting, imaginative, violent, and complex tale that I truly enjoyed. The story takes you on a wild ride with a ragged cast of characters through a traditional-style fantasy setting. Shades of gray abound in the Grim Company and the distinction between right and wrong and good and evil sometimes depends on nothing more than a character's jaded point of view. I'm not generous with my 5-star reviews, and the only things holding me back from full endorsement on this read were some Abercrombie-esqe character similarities and less than complete closure by story's end (though it is to be expected from the 1st book of a series). All-in-all, highly recommended. ( ) My first toe-dip into Grim-Dark Fantasy and I was surprised at how much I liked it. Of all the definitions of Grimdark that I found I like this one the best: described as fiction "where nobody is honorable and Might is Right" That about sums it up. L. Scull takes us into a world where god-like mage lords rule, maim and kill their loyal subjects without second thought. And, those said subjects in turn plot to kill off the mage lords. This is a universe set in a medieval environment, made up of various races, abominations created from past wars, and several levels of magic. There are some great characters. Two of my favorites being 2 curmudgeonly old guys, who actually turn out to be the heroes. Loved them. Not for those who want happy endings. no reviews | add a review

The Gods are dead. The Magelord Salazar and his magically enhanced troops, the Augmentors, crush any dissent they find in the minds of the populace. On the other side of the Broken Sea, the White Lady plots the liberation of Dorminia, with her spymistresses, the Pale Women. Demons and abominations plague the Highlands. The world is desperately in need of heroes. But what they get instead are a ragtag band of old warriors, a crippled Halfmage, two orphans and an oddly capable manservant: the Grim Company.
