Here's what I remember most about this book: telling everybody in my life about it while I was reading it! I found it just the most novel and interesting concept- what if, instead of the zombie infection tearing through people indiscriminately, or a post-apocalyptic landscape where only the smart, resourceful, and strong survive . . . all that was left were junkies? The premise of meth in one's veins keeping folks from succumbing to the infection is just incredibly unique: from the initial discovery (much like The Walking Dead's opening coma, coming off of a bender to find out what's going on is very fun), to the near-comical antics of the single-minded hunt for more drugs, to the concept of the only people left being methheads, with all the trustworthiness and personality flaws that entails, to the real concern of what to do when the drugs run out, to the heartbreaking concept of wanting to get clean but literally being unable to do so . . . I was never bored once while reading it. The only downside is that, well, there's no happy ending- and perhaps it's naive to have hoped that it might've. But I can't imagine that anybody would dislike this book, and think fan of the zombie genre would love it. After all, addicts are already nearly invisible and forgotten in our society, but this book puts them at the center (both simultaneously unflinching and yet somehow sympathetic- a masterful feat to pull off) of a story where I, at least, have never seen them before. Highly recommend. Interesting. Disgusting. Intense. Harsh, poetic, and gross. I struggled to understand a meth addict's p.o.v., while during a zombie apocalypse..... Not really sure if I could. I never knew there were so many nicknames for meth. So many ways to take it. I'm a little sorry I read it......it was just the gory traffic accident of an ending I thought it would be. I need to go see some Disney cartoons, now. no reviews | add a review

HTML:There's more than one kind of monster. When Chase first sees the little girl in umbrella socks disemboweling the Rottweiler, he's not too concerned. As a longtime meth addict, he's no stranger to such horrifying, drug-fueled hallucinations. But as he and his fellow junkies soon discover, the little girl is no illusion. The end of the world really has arrived. And with Chase's life already shattered by addiction, the apocalypse might actually be an opportunity—a last chance to hit restart, win back the love of his life, and become the person he once dreamed of being. That is, if the darkness inside him doesn't destroy everything—again. From the Trade Paperback edition.. No library descriptions found. |
