In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platform that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate. I really liked these stories. I read Wool about a year ago and was blown away by how awesome it was. The writing style, the characters, the story, etc. was all top notch and something that I wasn't expecting. I bought the book when I first got my Kindle Fire and thought, "Eh, why not? It's cheap and I need something to try out on my new toy." I'm glad that I made that decision.

The second part of the story, which is really the prequel/sort of concurrent timeline to Wool, is engrossing and leaves a trail of breadcrumbs like the first novel but in a much more controlled and paced manner. I don't know if I liked the characters nearly as much as the Wool, but the story and the circumstances were incredible and made these people who they are. It was fascinating to dig deeper (no pun intended) into the beginning - how did this all happen and why?

I can't wait for the next part of the series and Hugh Howey has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Bravo! ( )

Excellent second book - so good I ran off into the third book without remembering to note I'd finished it! ( )

Riveting continuation of the story from Wool. Lots of mysteries resolved with new ones created along the way. Couldn't put it down for four days. ( )

Shift is the prequel to the events in Wool, the first in the Silo trilogy, and while it does fill in a lot of the background that was conspicuously absent from the first book, overall it raises more questions than it answers. If you’ve already read Wool I'd say your options are to consider it to be a stand-alone (from the author’s notes I take it that was his original intent) or commit to reading all three. That’s assuming the last book pulls the story together better than this one does and answers the larger questions it introduces. ( )
