Very well researched--just because a book deals with supernatural demons doesn't mean it should scrimp on historical detail. A little maudlin and draggy in the middle, with a lover's triangle that is more of a straight line, but I look forward to the next installment. Well written, if a little too earnest for my taste, historical fantasy set in Regency London. It is the coming out season of lady Helen, and her uncle means to see her married to erase the taint of her dead parents transgressions. As Lady Helen reaches maturity, she comes into strange powers, and learn disturbing things of her own nature and place in the world. Although the worldbuilding is adequate, the mythology is less than compelling. Really wanted to like this, but it was TOO MUCH. You know how you wish that Libba Bray would calm it with the 20's slang in The Diviners? This is more irritating than that. Probably worth noting that I hate historical fiction, but was drawn in with the promise of monsters. Not for me. You might like it though... no reviews | add a review

This is really more of a 3.5 rating, but I am rounding up. This was a wonderful book...but one I definitely recommend to read as much as you can in one sitting. It's a bit daunting - there's a lot of atmosphere, plot and characters to get to know and the pacing can feel pretty slow as you get to know the time and the people.
But the Dark Days Club, once you get to know it, is interesting and a great twist on a typical historical story. Helen's story felt real - her struggle to live by social norms but also try to help Darby and Lord Carlston. It was a fun adventure and I did enjoy it! ( )
