Lara Jean's inner dialogue is hilarious and I love that I see a little of my awkward self in her. I'm also always drawn to characters that on the outside are perceived as one way, but slowly over the course of the book are revealed as someone else. It's almost like the author wrote the characters to be like real people. ( ) I remember reading this book for the first time, and being so surprised as to how much I related to the main character, Lara Jean. She was afraid of confronting those who she really liked, and wrote love letters and put them in a box, one that her mother had gave her before she passed away. However, after her older sister had went away to college, the main characters' younger sister, Kitty, had leaked them, and sent them to the people Lara had liked. As Lara went to school unknowing of what her sister had did, she got confronted by all the people she had written to. One of them was Peter K, her ex-bestfriend's boyfriend. However, she also sent a letter to her older sisters ex-boyfriend, whom she was friends with, by the name of Josh Sanderson. These two people ended up leading her into a love triangle later on. However, the starting of the main conflict in the book made her realize she wrote these letters because she was scared of experiencing love with another individual. She was afraid of confrontation. But she overcomes that, which is such a beautiful aspect of the book. I had such a great time reading this in the car, on the plane, basically anywhere. It took me to another world through detailed description and amazing characters! It was okay. I think it's a good story for younger teens to read about an older squeaky clean girl who still calls her dad "daddy" ALL THE TIME. But for an older teen (or an adult), this girl is annoying. She's so childish and immature - and for losing her mother and having to help raise her little sister......It just seems like she should be more mature than she is. And with all her little weird quirks, I just found her not believable. And I didn't find the story line interesting or believable as well. Initial Thoughts I didn’t fully love the Summer series by Jenny Han so I wasn’t getting my hopes up for this one. The summary makes it seem kind of sappy and typical but I’m really glad that’s not how it turned out. My New BFF I really liked Peter. I could tell the whole book that he wasn’t as much of a jerk as he made everyone believe. I just felt that he could be such an intense character and I’m glad that I found out there was another book coming out while I was reading this. He’s got a long way to develop but I have a feeling that the author will do really great things with him. My Crush I didn’t really have a crush in this book. Maybe the next I’ll develop one! Writing Style There’s a lot of controversy about Lara Jean, the main character. She was extremely immature and annoying at times but I kind of felt that she was acting her age. I know I wasn’t that bad when I was 16 but seeing all the 16 year olds now I believe she fits in that age well. I’m glad that the author didn’t do anything expected in this book. Some places I thought I could guess what was going to happen and thankfully the author surprised me. Closing Thoughts I really, really enjoyed reading this book. While I didn’t love all the characters I thought they fit well together. I think the plot is the best part of this book. There’s room for character development in the next book for sure but I’m nervous that the plot won’t meet up to the expectations this book has left me with. I guess I’ll just have to read it and see! At the end of the day I loved reading this book and I’m glad I picked it up.
The book is definitely a fun roller coaster ride of emotions in the best way. You will fall in love with the characters by the end of the first book. The book is so intriguing, it will keep you up wanting more and this is the exact reason why I love that it's a series of three books. I totally recommend this YA romance book. It is sure to get you out of a reading slump. The romantic scenes will have you shrieking in excitement, You’ll want a Peter K of your own by the end of the book.
