His unique abilities get him picked to secretly subvert society by becoming a surgically altered Gold and entering their competition that determines who rises to the top of the top. The competition is very Lord of the Flies or Hunger Games like, with rival factions of students battling to the death. Parts of the book where overly long and detailed, but it is a fascinating read and set up to a series that is like a soap opera or political intrigue battle for more quality in society. no reviews | add a review

Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow and Reds like him, are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity's overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so. No library descriptions found. |

Red Rising is the first book in the Red Rising saga by Pierce Brown. Maybe because of the writing style or because of the one dimensional characters or because of the Young Adult Genre, i don't like this book that much.
The story of this book revolves around Darrow a low Red who after a tragedy in his life, trying to stage a revolution towards the higher class peoples. When you hear that plot line, its awesome but like i mentioned above, due to some reason, i couldn't enjoy this book. I have DNF'd this book within 100 pages 3 times before and a main reason for this is the plot based writing and the character of Darrow.
Most of the book is written in a very fast pace for me and for a character based reader like me, when things are happening very fast, you cant enjoy the book for the characters and the pain they go through. Without understanding the character very well, everything written in a book would be words and those words doesn't mean anything or impact the reader very much. I think thats why i didn't liked this book as much as i wanted to.
For most of the book, the character Darrow reminded me more of Tau from "The Rage of Dragons" but even though both books are plot based and kind of shares the same over arching plot, i liked Rage of Dragons more because the character development was there for him more than i got it for Darrow. After nearly 75% of this book, i got some character development and flaws of Darrow and i liked him somewhat to finish the remaining book without complaining.
Only because of those last 25%, i am giving this book a 3 stars or else it would have been 1 star only. Also, even though i wont continue with this series normally, because so many reader mention that this series goes on a different and on a good way from book 2, i am willing to continue this series.
