Darkness had come to the town. Strange things were happening in the dead of night. Children would put a tooth under their pillow for the tooth fairy, but in the morning they would wake up to find a dead slug; a live spider; hundreds of earwigs creeping and crawling beneath their pillow. Evil was at work. But who or what was behind it?… (more)

Another great David Walliams book. ( )

This definitely COULD be a five-star book. I'm torn. I didn't like the dad dying in the end, and I REALLY didn't like the evil cat licking blood off of the pulled tooth. There was a fair amount of "boy humor" which made me roll my eyes... but ultimately it got to the point where I was laughing. Overall, pure absurdity. Purely amazing. I certainly intend to look into Walliam's other books. ( )

Dark, gruesome & quite scary, Walliams hits the spot again. ( )

This is one of the funniest books I have read. Alfie takes care of his dad who can no longer work in the mines because of his health. It's just Alfie and Da. A dentist moves into town and comes to school for a lecture. She studies all the children's teeth. A social worker, Winnie, has been assigned to Alfie's family. She sees Alfie's teeth and makes an appointment with the new dentist. Alfie and his friend Gabz feel there is something wrong with this dentist and Alfie wants no part of dentistry (bad early experience.) And so the chase begins.

I laughed throughout the book. I loved the characters especially Winnie, Raj, and Alfie. Outrageous and mysterious, it is wonderful how Alfie and Gabz find out the truth. I loved Da. There is more to him than a sick old man. He's a hero.

This is a book for everyone. It brightened my day. ( )

Oh what fun. Some of this made me a little uncomfortable (it's a bit dark in places from an adult perspective and some the descriptions of the fat social worker make me wince) but overall it was a delight. Absolutely laugh out loud funny in places and full of creepiness galore. Plus knickers and fart jokes which are probably spot on for the intended age group ;) ( )
