A spy mission, a Holocaust tale, and a first-class work of nonfiction. In 1945, at the end of World War II, Adolf Eichmann, the head of operations for the Final Solution, walked into the mountains of Germany and vanished from view. Sixteen years later, an elite team of spies captured him at a bus stop in Argentina and smuggled him to Israel, resulting in one of the century's most important trials--one that cemented the Holocaust in the public imagination. THE NAZI HUNTERS is the thrilling and fascinating story of what happened between these two events. Survivor Simon Wiesenthal opened Eichmann's case; a blind Argentinean and his teenage daughter provided crucial information. Finally, the Israeli spies--many of whom lost family in the Holocaust--embarked on their daring mission, recounted here in full. Based on the adult bestseller HUNTING EICHMANN, which is now in development as a major film, and illustrated with powerful photos throughout, THE NAZI HUNTERS is a can't-miss work of narrative nonfiction for middle-grade and YA readers.… (more)

{My thoughts} – Adolf Eichmann was the head of operations for the Nazis finale solution to the Jewish question. I am widely aware that nearly any book I read that is going to based on what happened at this time in history is going to be sad and heart breaking. I’m not oblivious to that fact. I still to this day cannot fathom how any individuals were able to blindly follow Hitler and cause the deaths of so many innocent people.

While I was reading this book I’d learned something that I hadn’t already have known. I didn’t know that there had been a plan of relocation for the Jews developed, as opposed to mass murdering them all. I didn’t know that Hitler decided to change the relocation plan to mass murdering. I’d only known about the mass murdering portion in this book.

The more I was reading the book the more I wanted to throw it across the room. I can’t begin to imagine how much pain, suffering, mental and emotional abuse the Jewish population was subjected to because of Hitler’s desire to “clean out the Jewish population.”

I am thankful that there were individual’s still interested in hunting down Nazi war criminals. I am thankful that they were able to follow up on tips that were provided and that they were able to find Adolf Eichmann. I however, cannot understand how he was able to stay under the radar for so long. It’s amazing that he wasn’t discovered sooner, however, in the end, Justice did prevail.

This book would make an excellent read for someone wanting to learn more about Adolf Eichmann and his part in the Holocaust. This book would make an excellent source with all it’s sources in the back of the book, to help further one’s research in this subject matter. This book will make an excellent book to read when covering the Holocaust in History class. I highly recommend it for these reasons and many many more. ( )

Some fifteen years after the end of World War II, Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi official responsible for transporting millions of Jews to their deaths, was spotted in Argentina. After receiving a tip on Eichmann’s whereabouts, Israeli spies tried to confirm Eichmann’s identity. Their first attempt was inconclusive. Three years later, they tried again, and this time they positively identified the man as Eichmann. The Israelis then conceived of and launched a plan to kidnap Eichmann and take him to Israel to stand trial for his war crimes.

This is a revision of Bascomb’s Hunting Eichmann for a young adult audience. It’s a powerful, utterly absorbing account of the Israeli mission. The bibliography and notes provide evidence of Bascomb’s extensive archival research and interviews with participants. Photographs of documents and physical artifacts allow readers to view some of the physical evidence that eventually led to Eichmann’s conviction and execution. Bascomb successfully conveys the emotional impact of the Israeli mission. Unlike the operatives involved, many of whom suffered and lost close family members as result of Eichmann’s wartime actions, I can only claim a general feeling of loss to the extent that the Holocaust was a loss for all of humanity, and this account deeply stirred me. In nonfiction narrative that reads like a thriller, the author traces the manhunt that led to the capture of Adolf Eichmann, Hitler’s enforcer of the “Final Solution” in Hungary. Primary Sources,

In detailing the capture of Adolf Eichmann, one of the most notorious and infamous Nazi leaders, this book really adds something unique to WWII nonfiction. Truly, it reads like a spy caper. After painstakingly locating an elusive Eichmann, whose own escape from Europe could be a book itself, a group of Mossad operatives is assembled. This elite Israeli espionage force is to not only illegally abduct a citizen of a sovereign nation, but to bring him back alive and unharmed so that he may stand trial for the greatest crime of the century. I can imagine a classroom of high school students absolutely devouring this book. It suspenseful, full of gadgets--- suitcases with hidden cameras, "burn" cars, special code names--- but also details the trial's place in history. ( )
