But the story is grippingly told. ( ) "Don't open your eyes." The cover clearly screams at you not to open your eyes. The story is wonderful, so much more scary for what you can imagine more than what you can see. Because this story is told in the dark - it's told through blindfolds and strained ears. Through scent and touch but almost never sight. Because to look - and to see - is to go mad. This is a masterful story, one read best in the near dark with a flashlight and no sound. Your heart will race, your breathing will quicken as the pace speeds up. I loved it. I look forward to more work from this author. 3.5 stars Bird Box by Josh Malerman was a really interesting and gripping study of fear and its manifestations. I was firstly drawn to this book by a couple of good reads friend's reviews of it and secondly by the Novel's cover which gives the reader a glimpse of fear that quickly unfolds as you read this post apocalyptic novel. " The house is quiet. The doors are locked, the curtains are closed, mattresses are nailed over the windows. They are out there.................. Every now and then I love a novel like this that gives me something different to fuel my imagination and believe me my imagination was working overtime while reading Bird box. I think an important fact readers need to beware of is that Bird box wont give you all the answers and is not an action packed novel, this is one of those books that you the reader takes part in the atmosphere of the story and I suggest you reading this in one or two sittings to get the full impact. An interesting and atmospheric novel, well worth reading if you have an interest in Post Apocalyptic type books.
Malerman overreaches a bit in his debut, which could use as much attention to the cast as to the mood, but the mood is chillingly effective. Belongs to SeriesBird Box (1) AwardsDistinctionsNotable Lists

HTML: Now a Netflix film starring Sandra Bullock, Sarah Paulson, Rosa Salazar and John Malkovich! Written with the narrative tension of The Road and the exquisite terror of classic Stephen King, Bird Box is a propulsive, edge-of-your-seat horror thriller, set in an apocalyptic near-future world—a masterpiece of suspense from the brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman. Something is out there . . . Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from. Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now, that the boy and girl are four, it is time to go. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat—blindfolded—with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children's trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster? Engulfed in darkness, surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, Malorie embarks on a harrowing odyssey—a trip that takes her into an unseen world and back into the past, to the companions who once saved her. Under the guidance of the stalwart Tom, a motely group of strangers banded together against the unseen terror, creating order from the chaos. But when supplies ran low, they were forced to venture outside—and confront the ultimate question: in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted? Interweaving past and present, Josh Malerman's breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page. .No library descriptions found. |
