I like this series but it is still not my favorite of [a:Suzanne Wright|5769764|Suzanne Wright|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1331458504p2/5769764.jpg] To often there are areas that come off as 'Filler' and nothing to do with the story. Also, the writing/flow of this series is not as fluid to me. The steamy scenes are super hot and often mildly erotic. The suspense of what is going on sometimes fills jumpy. Each book in this series has been better than the one before it. So I will most likely continue. Especially since the next book is about Ava and Salem. no reviews | add a review

It's been five months since vampire Sam Parker Bound herself to Jared Michaels, her powerful co-commander within the Grand High Master vampire's personal legion. Life as a Bound couple has been going just fine . . . until the Grand High Master announces he will be stepping down from his position and wants Sam and Jared to take his place. Oh joy. Despite Sam's reservations, she agrees to ascend. But something very powerful has surfaced; something that is quickly decreasing the vampire population and could steal the lives of people close to Sam. At the same time, she finds herself under the scrutiny of vindictive vampires accusing her of exploiting her position as a commander-something that would threaten her ascension. Under the watchful eyes of people who would love nothing more than to strip her of her title, Sam and Jared must continue to conceal her hybrid status and find a way to fight this power that nothing before them has ever been able to overcome. If not, they stand to lose not only the people they hold close, but their future as the Grand High Pair. No library descriptions found. |

I'm not sure I would have loved it as much if it was just the first book though tbh - the next two really flesh out the relationship and the world. Which makes sense, considering it was the author's first (self) published work.
Both MCs are equally possessive and protective of each other. Both are blunt and demanding. Neither wants to change the other. There's no whining, no feeling sorry for themselves, no angsty bullshit here. Pure heat and resistance overcome by realization and change.
Lots of friendship and loyalty, although - secondary characters are not all that well fleshed out, but fun nonetheless. The token drama queen queer best friend trope did bother me - this is a very heteronormative world.
The plot is low-stakes, predictable enough to be comforting and inventive enough to keep me from getting bored. The humour is snarky and the comeuppance increasingly satisfying. There are bad baddies and redeemable ones.
I'll be honest that I skimmed the clunkier exposition - not paying close attention to names or gifts did not affect my enjoyment of the squad dynamics in practice or in the field. When the setup in the third book starts to happen for the next couples' stories, I just searched them up. There's no major character development for them yet anyway.
There's violence, some of it is graphic, no real gore to speak of.
As for the erotica, there is plenty of on-page graphic oral, manual, and p/v sex with plenty of dirty talk scattered throughout. He is dominant, she is not submissive in the slightest. Very light bondage once or twice. ( )
