This book ended up to be better than I had though it would be when I was about halfway through it. The style is quite dated (written in 1959), the characters and descriptions are maddeningly stereotyped, but the untangling of the mysteries was surprisingly satisfying. ( )

Alexander Hero, a professionally skeptical psychic investigator, is called in to deal with a plague of ghosts at Parradine Hall, an English stately home turned into a guesthouse. The case is not as brilliant as The Hand of Mary Constable, but it has moments, and is lighter in tone. ( )

Epigraph
Neither Mr. Alexander Hero nor the author has ever encountered a genuine ghost - but that doesn't mean there aren't any; only that up to now with them the case rests as unproven. In the meantime, all spooks, spirits, bogles, characters, places, and situations in this entertainment are ficticious. No persons living or dead are here delineated. P.G.

First words
The fact that the grim and extraordinary haunting of Pardine Hall, East Walsham, Norfolk, seat of the Lords Paradine since the year 1523, did not reach the ears of the scandalous press was not only fortunate but little less than a miracle.
