You simply MUST listen to this audio book. It's probably the best book I've listened to - AIDAN's voice and the voices of the "afflicted" gave me nightmares. I also recommend grabbing a physical copy to follow along because the design is fantastic. I've never really said this about a book before, but this absolutely needs to be made into a video game. It would be so cool! Thoughts When I Finished: When I finished this book I couldn’t even put my thoughts into words. I was sad it was over (until the next book) but I felt satisfied with how it ended. My mind was blown from the way everything unfolded and at some points I was terrified for the character. There were a lot of emotions pouring out of me when I finished reading it and I couldn’t pick up another book for a little while. What I Loved: I really did love the format of this book. I know people are going on and on about it but I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story in this way. The interviews were probably my favourite part though because we got to see more of the characters personalities that way. I also really loved the villain in this book. I guess there were a couple of them but the most concerning one was the AI system. I’m not sure if you’d count it as a villain really but it was just not nice. I think someone obviously programmed it wrong. It seemed too clever for a computer though and I think that freaked me out just a little. Computers just don’t work that way and it made it seem kind of unrealistic but the plot was good enough for me to look past it. What I Didn’t Like: There’s not much I didn’t like about this book. The only thing I can really think of is that because of the format of this book, it was hard to get a feel for the characters like in a normal book. I found myself a little distanced from them, not really caring if they lived or died. I wish the authors could have helped us just a little bit with that because it’s not a great book without getting attached to the characters. One other thing that bothered me (which I’m sure will be remedied in the next book), was that we really didn’t get much information about the society before this war started. I didn’t quite understand the town they came from or why the war had started in the first place. It could have used just a little more work but I still found it a fantastic book. Who I’d recommend To: I’d recommend this book to anyone who can go into it with an open mind. There’s a ton of people who are gushing over this book but there’s just as many who aren’t a fan. I’m seeing a lot of sci-fi fans who didn’t like it because it was too similar t other sci-fi books and tv shows. Other people just couldn’t wrap their heads around the format. I think that if you want to read this book you have to go in with a clean slate and try not to judge based off of what you’ve seen or heard. Quick Review: This is a great book for anyone looking to start a journey in sci-fi. It has all the parts of a great story that’s made even better by taking place in space. The unique format in which it’s told only makes reading this book more of an adventure that you’ll be sucked into. You’ll be dying for the next book after finishing this one.
No One Hears You Scream In Space.... Some of you may be too young to know that reference, but holy moly is it appropriate for this book! I recommend everyone go grab this book as soon as possible. It is Ender's Game, Aliens, War World Z, 2001 Space Odyssey, all together, rolled up into one fantastic, heart-stropping, scary as hell, novel. When I first begun this book I was really afraid that my interest wan't going to be held because the formatting seemed a bit cheesy to me. It's presented like a case file for an investigation with supporting documentation, photos, emails, and correspondences. If you think about it, it's a brilliant way to present this story, but if you had less talented writers who focused more on the gimmick you would end up with a sub-par novel. However, you have Amie Kaufman and Jay Krisoff at the helm, and so we end up with a thought provoking, well crafted, and immensely intriguing story that is presented in a creative way. The story starts off with the destruction of a planet. Then we have a ever so slow, but always present chance across space. All the while, you have mechanical breakdowns, glitchey computers, virus outbreaks, and the people in charge trying to manage this all during war-time scenarios occurring. Civilians are being conscripted for service, and people are starting to get scared. This brings us to our main characters, Kady is really good with computers, and Ezra landed a position as a flight pilot. Through their on going texts and emails the story is told. All these components could go really wrong, but in this book created by these amazing writers, it all works. It works so much better than I could've imagined possible. I was scared, I was concerned, and the story continued... This is the first book in what is set to be a series of three books, and I will be waiting for each new book. If someone approached me saying they never really read or enjoyed science fiction, this is the book I would direct them to for a chance to change their heart. I highly recommend this book. HTML:For fans of Marie Lu comes the first book in an epic series that bends the sci-fi genre into a new dimension. “A truly beautiful novel that redefines the form." —Victoria Aveyard, bestselling author of Red Queen This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded. The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than a speck at the edge of the universe. Now with enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to evacuate with a hostile warship in hot pursuit. But their problems are just getting started. A plague has broken out and is mutating with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a web of data to find the truth, it’s clear the only person who can help her is the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again. Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, maps, files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes. “Prepare yourselves for Illuminae.” —EW.com “[Y]ou’re not in for an ordinary novel experience. . . .” —Bustle.com “A truly interactive experience. . . . The first thing I have to say is, the Audiobook is awesome. They used multi cast audiobook.
The second thing I have to say is the overall story is good.
But other than these, all other things are kind of downer for me. I mean, I like this book and possibly reread them in far future but there are so many problems in it.
1. The book is 600 pages and thd story picks up only after 300 pages and until 300 pages, the story kind of focus on one thing for couple of chapters and then forget about them until the end.
It was like the story starts to pick the pace and then suddenly we are focusing on the next thing. But from thd 50% mark, the story picked thd pace and it's awesome.
2. So many unwanted deaths. I know it's a SciFi book and the stakes are high here but could have reduced these many deaths.
3. The final chapter was a bummer for me. I mean the reason the bad guys are doing all this is yo retrieve a person?? Come on people...
Overall, a good story, nice narration but could have been better.
PS: Maybe I felt like this because I read Leviathan Wakes before and this Feels like a low budget Leviathan Wakes for me. ( )
