There aren’t many books out on gardening in our part of the world, and there’s always room for another good one. Lyndon Penner’s new book, Garden Design for the Short Season Yard: Everything You Need to Know for the Chinook and Canadian Prairie Zones, is a good one.
Like Penner’s earlier books, Garden Design for the Short Season Yard is chatty and opinionated, but backed by solid knowledge of what grows here, real-life examples, and lots of pictures.
He starts with practical basics: inspiration, components of design, space analysis, designing for plant health and wildlife. Next, design considerations: trends, themes, basic elements of design, negative space, focal points, colour, and “beyond the basic elements.” Then he covers drafting your design, plant choice, picking the right tree, and actually planting. Finally there’s a section with short critiques of real-life examples. It’s very helpful in articulating what makes a design work or not. He caps it with an appendix of definitions and worksheets and a good index.
I absolutely loved spending time with Lyndon while reading this book – he’s friendly, funny, encouraging, knowledgeable, snarky, and more, with a wide experience in this climate that is invaluable. I don’t always agree with his opinions (he disses lavender, which I love, and which has been doing very well in my garden, knock on wood!), but that’s fine. It would be a dull old world if we all agreed.
