Aristotle's Poetics is best known for its definitions and analyses of tragedy and comedy, but it also applies to truth and beauty as they are manifested in the other arts. In our age, when the natural and social sciences have dominated the quest for truth, it is helpful to consider why Aristotle claimed poetry is more philosophical and more significant than history. Like so many other works by Aristotle, the Poetics has dominated the way we have thought about all forms of dramatic performance in Europe and America ever since. The essence of poetry lies in its ability to transcend the particulars of everyday experience and articulate universals, not merely what has happened but what might happen and what ought to happen. © Agora Publications.… (more)

What are the better components of poetry of epic and tragedy? Is the absurd or irrational or improbable a key figure in goodness of this art? Perhaps as Aristotle states these are notes to weigh- somehow the debate begins and I shall not ruin it for the soon come interlocutors which is best tragedy or epic which the finer art ? Give the author some sustainable ear ( )

the tradition surrounding this is responsible for incredible short-sightedness in western aesthetics, i.e. the obsession with thematic content and plot (related to and flawed for the same reasons as are western metaphysics of illusion and reality). do not try to explain plot holes to me, or draw up a big diagram of soundplay in a sonnet of shakespeare, or explain to me the technical difficulty involved in subsurface scattering and how mastery of xyz element is such that all the science experts around the table can add the work to the unending list of historically valuable works of art. there is no reason to think this way!!!! i HAVE the effect of all that work right in front of me, and the exact structure of its material causality is not going to make me feel any different!!

not even useful for understanding contemporary material to any degree of detail ( )

First words

Although Aristotle's Poetics appears to have had little impact on literary criticism in antiquity, critics and scholars since the Renaissance have placed this brief work at the very center of the criticism of poetry and drama.
