Not sure how to rate. Without another reviewer here suggesting that the boy was being kind, playing along by pretending he couldn't find Elephant, I would have missed that theme and given in three stars. Even with that help, I'm not sure I can boost it to four because I don't understand why the parents are so oblivious - maybe they're so used to the boy's imagination that they don't feel the need to engage every time, and Elephant is only imaginary?

I found this as a library discard in near mint condition. I'm guessing that I'm not the only baffled reader.

Maybe it is a stretch to call it a seek and find, but it is really fun seeing all the playful places elephant hides.

Cute, funny, and one of those nice diverse books where the character is just a being a kid. ( )

* Prominently features a diverse cast: a cute little African-American boy stars with his elephant friend; the boy's mom and dad also make an appearance.
* Would work for a toddler/preschool storytime: yep, kids and parents will get a kick out of the visual gags--a huge elephant that somehow the boy fails to see on each page. Text is also short and sweet, so you shouldn't have any problems holding the attention of the younger kids. ( )
